Johannesburg, 8 July 2024: President Cyril Ramaphosa was honoured with a phone call from His Excellency President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi of the Arab Republic of Egypt, who extended his heartfelt congratulations to President Ramaphosa on his recent re-election. The conversation took place on the evening of Sunday, 7 July 2024, marking a significant moment in South Africa’s diplomatic relations.

Strengthening Bilateral Ties

Vincent Magwenya, spokesperson to President Ramaphosa, recounted the details of the call. President Ramaphosa expressed his sincere gratitude for President El-Sisi’s warm wishes. The two leaders reaffirmed their commitment to enhancing the robust partnership between South Africa and Egypt, focusing on bilateral, continental, and multilateral interests.

Magwenya stated, “Of particular significance to the two leaders is the need to work together on the Palestinian issue and the crisis in the Gaza Strip. The Presidents committed themselves to deepening the fraternal ties between Egypt and South Africa as part of advancing continental solidarity.”

Promoting Economic Cooperation

In addition to political collaboration, President Ramaphosa and President El-Sisi concurred on the importance of expanding trade, mutual investment, and economic cooperation. Both nations stand to benefit from fortified economic ties, fostering growth and development that could ripple across the continent.

A New Term for Ramaphosa

President Ramaphosa’s re-election was solidified by the National Assembly on Friday, 14 June 2024. He was officially inaugurated on Wednesday, 19 June 2024. His new term is set to focus on several key areas of development, not just within South Africa but across Africa, fostering a shared vision of prosperity and unity.
