DR Sam Motsuenyane
President Cyril Ramaphosa has extended his deepest sympathies over the loss of Dr Sam Motsuenyane, a monumental figure in the South African business landscape, who sadly passed away at the age of 97. Dr Motsuenyane’s extraordinary life and enduring legacy as a co-founder of the National African Federated Chamber of Commerce (NAFCOC) and a key figure in the initialization of the African Bank have left an indelible mark on the country’s economic and social fabric.
Reflecting on the significance of Dr Motsuenyane’s contributions, especially at a time when apartheid cast a long shadow over the nation, President Ramaphosa remarked, “The passing of Dr Sam Motsuenyane 60 years after the establishment of NAFCOC is a profound reminder of the breadth, durability and longevity of his vision and passion for self-reliance and development.”
Dr Motsuenyane, whose life journey encompassed roles as an entrepreneur, leader in organised business, parliamentarian, and even South Africa’s pioneer ambassador to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, was a paragon of the resilient national character and ubuntu values. His profound belief in self-sufficiency and economic independence not only shaped his career but also became interwoven with the fabric of South Africa’s constitution, empowering individuals with the freedom to choose their trade or profession.
Beyond his professional pursuits, Dr Motsuenyane was an Esteemed Member of the National Order of the Baobab (Gold), a prestigious recognition of his remarkable personal accomplishments and his unwavering commitment to uplifting communities.
As the nation prepares to observe the 2024 National Orders Ceremony, the President reminisced about the honour bestowed upon Dr Motsuenyane in 2002, highlighting his role as a patriot and an inspirational figure during the early years of democracy. “Dr Motsuenyane’s passing on the eve of the National Orders Ceremony causes us to recall the honour bestowed on him as the nation paid tribute to an outstanding patriot and source of inspiration for our then fledgling democracy,” said President Ramaphosa.
