Pick n Pay founder and philanthropist Raymond Ackerman
President Cyril Ramaphosa recently expressed his sadness at the passing of Raymond Ackerman, founder of Pick n Pay and renowned philanthropist. Ackerman, who was also an Esteemed Member of the Order of The Baobab, passed away at the age of 92.
President Ramaphosa extended his condolences to Wendy Ackerman, Ackerman’s children – Gareth, Kathy, Suzanne, Jonathan – and the extended family.
Ackerman’s contributions to South Africa were notable, leading to his recognition and award of the Order of The Baobab in 2014.
Throughout his career, Ackerman was committed to uplifting the lives of South Africans. One of his most significant achievements was fighting against the apartheid state’s monopoly on basic goods.
During this time, he dramatically reduced the cost of essential items like bread, milk, and chicken. Ackerman was also an advocate for the poor, fighting against the inclusion of value-added tax (VAT) on basic food lines and successfully winning the battle.
In addition to his economic efforts, Ackerman demonstrated his commitment to racial equality and inclusivity within his company.
He was one of the first executives to promote black South Africans to senior positions and to acknowledge black trade unions, even during a period when their operations were banned in the country.
Ackerman also abolished race classification on the company’s human resources payroll, emphasizing his belief in equality and fairness.
Beyond his business endeavors, Ackerman devoted his resources to supporting the education of young South Africans.
Through the Ackerman Family Trust, hundreds of young people have received scholarships and become graduates across various professions since the 1970s.
President Ramaphosa praised Ackerman as an exceptional business leader and entrepreneur who prioritized people and confronted the injustices and discrimination perpetuated by the apartheid regime. His name resonated in millions of households around the country.
As South Africa bids farewell to Raymond Ackerman, his legacy as a compassionate leader, passionate advocate for the people, and dedicated philanthropist will continue to inspire and uplift future generations.
