President Cyril Ramaphosa has expressed profound sorrow over the deaths of 12 learners from Rocklands Primary School and Laerskool Blyvooruitsig in Carletonville. The tragic event occurred in the Merafong City municipal area on Gauteng’s West Rand.

Presidential Condolences

President Ramaphosa conveyed his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families, their friends, fellow learners, and educators. Furthermore, he extended his wishes for a swift and complete recovery to the seven learners who sustained injuries in the incident involving a scholar transport vehicle.

“The loss of such young lives at the start of a new school term touches all of us as a nation,” President Ramaphosa expressed. “We wish the affected families and school communities the best as they mourn the passing of children who have been deprived of fulfilling their potential and spending their lives with families and friends. This tragedy, which regretfully is not the first of its kind to confront us, demands that we exercise our obligation to protect our children with the utmost care.”

Ministerial Support and Investigation

Transport Minister Barbara Creecy and Deputy Transport Minister Mkhuleko Hlengwa have also extended their deepest condolences to the families affected by this tragedy.

The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) is currently investigating the cause of the fatal accident, which took place on Wednesday morning at 06:42 on the D92. The crash involved a minibus transporting school children and a light delivery van.

Prioritising Road Safety

Speaking earlier this week at the South African Transport Conference held at the CSIR, Minister Creecy affirmed that road safety would receive priority attention in the seventh administration. The minister reiterated the government’s commitment to implementing measures aimed at safeguarding its citizens, particularly the youth, who represent the nation’s future.

Community Reaction

This devastating incident has sent shockwaves throughout the local community and South Africa at large. The affected schools, Rocklands Primary School and Laerskool Blyvooruitsig, have been enveloped in a somber atmosphere as they come to grips with the loss.

Parents, educators, and community leaders have come together to mourn and support one another during this incredibly challenging time. The Department of Basic Education has also pledged to provide psychological support to students, teachers, and families to help them cope with the emotional aftermath of the tragedy.
