President Cyril Ramaphosa Hosts President Xi Jinping on State Visit to South Africa

President Cyril Ramaphosa will be welcoming President Xi Jinping of the People’s Republic of China on a State Visit to South Africa on Tuesday, 22 August 2023.

This visit comes at a significant time as the two countries celebrate 25 years of diplomatic relations, with ties dating back even further to the Bandung conference in 1955.

The welcome ceremony will take place at the Union Buildings in Pretoria, setting the stage for the upcoming 15th BRICS Summit, scheduled for 22 – 24 August 2023.

The State Visit serves as an opportunity for President Xi and President Ramaphosa, along with their delegations, to reflect on the progress achieved under the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership (CSP) and explore avenues for further cooperation.

President Cyril Ramaphosa has hailed the sixth District Development Model (DDM) Presidential Imbizo as a success.

The Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between South Africa and China, guided by a Ten-Year Strategic Programme of Cooperation (2020–2029), spans various sectors and has laid the foundation for robust economic relations.

China stands as South Africa’s largest global trading partner by volume, with significant investments in infrastructure projects that have fueled job creation and development, such as the Small Harbour Development Project, the TVET Refurbishment Project, and the Mzimvubu Water Project.

During the State Visit, discussions will be centered around bolstering diplomatic, economic, and people-to-people relations.

Key areas of focus will include addressing the trade imbalance and diversifying South African exports to China, promoting sustainable foreign direct investment and supporting manufacturing, infrastructure, and beneficiation.

President Ramaphosa will also recognize China’s assistance in bilateral technical cooperation through the Forum for China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC), as well as engage on regional issues pertaining to development, peace, and security.

The State Visit is expected to yield several agreements and memoranda of understanding, ensuring the implementation of socio-economic cooperation initiatives that will benefit both nations.

Additionally, South Africa and China will jointly host the China-Africa Leader’s Roundtable on 24 August, further strengthening collaboration at the multilateral level, particularly within the FOCAC.

Furthermore, President Ramaphosa seeks Chinese support for South Africa and Africa’s push for the reform of global governance institutions, including the United Nations Security Council.

This aligns with the country’s commitment to enhance multilateral cooperation within the BRICS, the G77 plus China, and the G20.
