President Cyril Ramaphosa Hails 2024 Election Result as Triumph for South African Democracy

MIDRAND, South Africa – President Cyril Ramaphosa has declared the announcement of the 2024 National and Provincial Election results a monumental victory for democracy, constitutional order, and for all South Africans. Speaking at the Electoral Commission’s Results Operations Centre (ROC) on Sunday, Ramaphosa commended the electorate’s dedication to shaping the nation’s future through their votes.

A Celebration of Democracy

President Ramaphosa praised South Africans for actively participating in the elections, emphasizing the integral role of each vote. “South Africans have shown the power of their vote. They understand that their vote counts,” he said. He further highlighted that the election turnout illustrated the nation’s robust and enduring democratic spirit.

“The people have spoken. As leaders of political parties and society, we must heed their voice and respect their wishes,” he asserted.

Unity Amidst Diversity

The President also acknowledged the vibrant and often contentious election campaign. “Parties and candidates expressed diverse and sometimes conflicting views but remained steadfast in their commitment to democratic principles,” he noted. This adherence to democracy ensured a free, fair, and peaceful election, reflecting the will of the South African people.

Call for Collaboration

Ramaphosa called on all political entities to recognise and respect the election results, which he asserted mirror the will of the populace. He urged leaders to work together, transcending party lines, to address the nation’s challenges constructively.

“The people expect their leaders to collaborate for the common good. It is imperative that all parties find common ground and act in unison within the framework of our constitution,” he stressed. Ramaphosa reminded political representatives that their authority is vested in them by the people, and it must be exercised to advance the citizens’ interests.

Gratitude for Dedication and Service

The President extended his appreciation to the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) for their dedication and professionalism amid numerous challenges. “We thank the IEC staff and leadership for their tireless efforts in ensuring these successful elections,” he said.

He also commended the South African Police Service and National Defence Force for maintaining peace and stability during the voting process. Additionally, he acknowledged the Home Affairs staff for ensuring that as many voters as possible could participate by providing identity documents on Election Day.

Acknowledgement of Contributors

President Ramaphosa expressed his gratitude to independent candidates, political party members, and international observer teams who ensured a transparent electoral process. He also lauded the media for keeping the public well-informed.

“To the journalists, researchers, camera operators, and other media professionals, thank you for playing an essential role in educating South Africans about the election. Above all, we thank the citizens of South Africa for once again breathing life into our constitutional democracy,” Ramaphosa concluded.
