Johannesburg, South Africa – South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has expressed his heartfelt condolences to the people of Iran following the untimely demise of President Ayatollah Ebrahim Raisi and the country’s Foreign Minister, Hossein Amir-Abdollahian. The two dignitaries, along with several others, lost their lives in a helicopter crash in East Azerbaijan on their return journey to Iran this past Sunday.

President Ramaphosa, embodying the sentiments of both the South African government and its people, conveyed profound sorrow and solidarity with the Iranian nation during this tragic period. Speaking on the matter, he stated, “This is an extraordinary, unthinkable tragedy that has claimed a remarkable leader of a nation with whom South Africa enjoys strong bilateral relations and whom we were honoured to welcome to the BRICS fold in Johannesburg in 2023.”

The South African Head of State further added, “Our hearts go out to the affected families and the administration of the Islamic Republic of Iran. We join the country in this moment of mourning.”

The official statement from the South African Presidency echoed these sentiments, elaborating: “On behalf of the Government and people of South Africa, President Ramaphosa offers his deep condolences to the Supreme Leader of Iran, The Grand Ayatollah Sayyid Ali Khamenei, and the government and people of the Islamic Republic. President Ramaphosa’s thoughts are with the families of the late President and Foreign Minister as well as the relatives of the personnel and air crew who perished.”

The accident has left both nations in shock, marking a somber moment in the recent history of South Africa-Iran relations. President Raisi and Foreign Minister Amir-Abdollahian were key figures in strengthening the diplomatic ties between the two countries, fostering collaboration within international frameworks such as BRICS.
