Pretoria, 15 July 2024 – President Cyril Ramaphosa has extended his heartfelt congratulations to wheelchair tennis star Kgothatso Montjane on her remarkable victory at the Women’s Wheelchair Tennis Doubles at Wimbledon. Montjane, alongside her Japanese partner Yui Kamiji, triumphed over the Dutch duo Diede de Groot and Jiske Griffioen in straight sets to clinch the prestigious title.
Taking to social media platform X, President Ramaphosa expressed his pride and joy over Montjane’s achievement. “Proud congratulations to our star from Seshego, Kgothatso Montjane, and her Japanese partner, Yui Kamiji, on their straight-sets win over Diede de Groot and Jiske Griffioen to become the 2024 Women’s Wheelchair Tennis Doubles champions at Wimbledon this weekend,” he posted.
A Journey of Dedication and Success
This victory marks a significant milestone in Montjane and Kamiji’s successful partnership. The duo has reached at least eight finals together, securing the 2023 US Open and the 2023 French Open titles. Their victory at Wimbledon this year is especially sweet, considering they finished as runners-up in the same tournament last year.
President Ramaphosa highlighted Montjane’s exceptional achievements and her journey as a global tennis champion. “This victory at the home of the only major tournament played on grass crowns Kgothatso’s outstanding record in tournaments from Belgium and Switzerland, to the United States and Australia,” he said.
A Champion On and Off the Court
Beyond her achievements on the court, President Ramaphosa praised Montjane for her inspirational life and dedication to the sport. “We salute you, Kgothatso, on your life as a champion on and off the court, and we look forward to your continued success,” he added.
