President Cyril Ramaphosa has expressed profound sorrow following the tragic murder of six community patrollers in Tina Falls/Godini near Qumbu, Eastern Cape, on Sunday night. The patrollers, who were based at Lugongozo Senior Secondary School, were attacked by gunmen armed with rifles and handguns. Four other patrollers were injured in the attack, which has left the local community devastated.
In a public statement, Ramaphosa extended his condolences to the families of the deceased and expressed outrage at the senseless violence. He noted that this attack, which comes on the heels of a recent mass shooting in Lusikisiki, serves as a sobering reminder of the serious threat posed by criminal elements. He emphasized that “criminals are mistaken in believing they are untouchable” and vowed that both the attackers and anyone who protects them will face justice .
The SAPS has launched a high-priority investigation, with police officials reporting significant progress. The National Commissioner of SAPS, General Fannie Masemola, announced that they are pursuing strong leads and that arrests are imminent. The investigation has been supported by specialized detectives who are addressing a spate of violence that has recently gripped the region .
Ramaphosa reaffirmed the government’s commitment to work alongside local communities to combat crime. He called for unity among community leaders, civil society, and local authorities to collectively enhance public safety. He also assured that the government will continue providing psychological and social support to the victims’ families during this difficult time .
