President Cyril Ramaphosa
President Cyril Ramaphosa of South Africa has urged the international community to take immediate and concrete actions to end the suffering in Gaza and establish a path towards a just and peaceful resolution of the conflict.
His remarks were made during the Extraordinary Joint Meeting of BRICS Leaders and Leaders of invited BRICS members on the situation in the Middle East, which took place virtually on Tuesday.
The meeting was attended by the leaders of the BRICS countries – Brazil, Russia, India, and China – as well as leaders from Saudi Arabia, Argentina, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, and the United Arab Emirates. President Ramaphosa reiterated South Africa’s call for an immediate ceasefire and outlined several key steps that need to be taken to alleviate the crisis.
Firstly, President Ramaphosa called for an immediate and comprehensive ceasefire. The ongoing violence and loss of life must be brought to an end to prevent further suffering. Secondly, he emphasized the importance of opening humanitarian corridors to ensure that aid and essential services reach all those in need.
President Ramaphosa also called on all countries to exercise restraint and refrain from fueling the conflict by supplying weapons to the warring parties. Additionally, he stressed the need for the release of all civilian hostages and the resumption of a comprehensive dialogue led by Palestinians and Israelis, facilitated by the United Nations.
To ensure the protection of civilians and monitor the cessation of hostilities, President Ramaphosa proposed the deployment of a UN Rapid Deployment Force in Palestine. This force would have a clear mandate to uphold the ceasefire and protect innocent lives.
Lastly, President Ramaphosa called for the International Criminal Court to urgently initiate prosecutions against those responsible for war crimes committed during the conflict. Accountability is crucial for achieving a just and lasting peace.
President Ramaphosa underlined the importance of international solidarity in addressing the crisis. As an important voice representing the Global South, he believes that BRICS has a vital role to play in the international effort to achieve peace in the region.
The President concluded by saying, “Let this meeting stand as a clarion call for us to combine our efforts and strengthen our actions to end this historical injustice. Let us work together to realize a just, peaceful, and secure future for the people of both Palestine and Israel.”
