Ramaphosa Says There’s Room for Economic Growth and Transformation in 30-Year South Africa Review

Johannesburg – President Cyril Ramaphosa has emphasised the need for the Government of National Unity (GNU) to stay dedicated to the founding principles of collaboration and genuine cooperation. This call comes amid South Africa’s ongoing efforts to drive forward an inclusive programme aimed at improving the lives of all its citizens.

“South Africans made clear with their votes in last month’s elections that they want their elected representatives to put aside narrow interests and work together to build the country,” President Ramaphosa stated.

In his weekly newsletter, President Ramaphosa highlighted the establishment of the second GNU as a pivotal moment in the country’s democratic journey. He remarked that the success of the GNU would be gauged by the willingness of political entities to prioritise collective governance over individual power struggles.

A Legacy of Unity

Reflecting on the genesis of the first GNU in 1994, President Ramaphosa recounted its role in fostering nation-building and inclusivity from South Africa’s racially fragmented history. He reiterated that the current GNU must adhere to the Constitution and the Bill of Rights, focusing on eradicating poverty, promoting equality, increasing job creation, and ensuring government accountability.

“The GNU Statement of Intent provides a solid base for genuine cooperation between parties across the political spectrum who have signed up of their own accord,” the President noted. The Statement underscores foundational principles such as respect for constitutionalism, transparency, community participation, evidence-based policy, and integrity in public service.

Priorities for Growth

The parties involved in the GNU have reached consensus on several key priorities, with economic growth at the forefront. President Ramaphosa underscored the urgency of achieving rapid, inclusive, and sustainable economic development to address unemployment and stimulate job creation.

“It will be critical that the GNU stays the course on the structural reform that is underway to improve the business operating environment and establish South Africa as an investment destination of choice,” he added. These reforms are essential to overcoming entrenched challenges in significant industries, creating jobs, and boosting economic opportunities.

Building Consensus and Action

There is widespread agreement among GNU parties on the primary objectives for the new administration, sparking optimism about South Africa’s future trajectory. President Ramaphosa emphasised that the GNU’s programme would be further refined through the National Dialogue process, ensuring broader representation and consensus-building.

“We remain committed to consensus-building and to the representation of a broad range of interests and viewpoints within government. At the same time, we are all keenly aware that South Africans expect action, implementation and results,” President Ramaphosa explained.

A Promising Future

The President’s message concluded on a hopeful note, urging all GNU members to maintain the momentum and goodwill generated. He stressed the imperative to not allow obstacles or minor differences to derail the country’s progress.

“Our stated commitment to work together constructively and for South Africa’s benefit has generated a great deal of goodwill that we should not squander. South Africans are watching. We should not waste our energies on those who stand in the way of our country’s progress or lose momentum over differences that can be resolved,” President Ramaphosa said.

“The 27th of April 1994 was a victory for non-racialism, for non-sexism, for human dignity and progress. Not just in South Africa, but everywhere. It was a victory for reconciliation.” - President Cyril Ramaphosa #FreedomDay2024 #Freedom30
