President Cyril Ramaphosa has urged all South Africans, especially leaders, to reflect on the values and principles that shaped the life and activism of the late Pravin Gordhan. Speaking at Gordhan’s special official funeral held at the Inkosi Albert Luthuli Convention Centre in eThekwini, the President paid tribute to the former Cabinet Minister, highlighting the importance of integrity, courage, and service that defined Gordhan’s political career.

“There are a great many lessons we can draw from his life and his political activism,” the President said, emphasizing that the best way to honour Gordhan is for individuals to reflect on their own actions and contributions to society. President Ramaphosa underscored the need for South Africans to embody the values of activism and resilience that Gordhan exemplified throughout his life.

Reflecting on Integrity and Activism

President Ramaphosa described Gordhan as a leader who remained true to his ideals, standing firm in his fight for justice even during the most challenging times. Gordhan’s leadership during South Africa’s struggle against apartheid, his role in the United Democratic Front, and his involvement in Operation Vula were some of the pivotal moments in his activism. His enduring commitment to public service and resistance to corruption, particularly during the turbulent years of state capture, were also highlighted by the President as examples of Gordhan’s exceptional integrity and courage.

Gordhan’s defiance against state capture and his opposition to corruption in government left an indelible mark on South Africa’s political landscape. President Ramaphosa noted that even when faced with personal attacks and challenges, Gordhan’s commitment to justice never wavered. “Where many tried to bring you low with their insults, your feet remained firmly on the high ground,” the President said, acknowledging the sacrifices Gordhan made for the country.

A Call for Moral Courage in Difficult Times

In his address, President Ramaphosa reminded mourners of the importance of moral courage during times of crisis. He reflected on how Gordhan’s activism and unwavering dedication to serving the people of South Africa serve as an inspiration for future generations. “It is in times of difficulty that moral courage is valued most,” said Ramaphosa, adding that South Africa’s journey towards recovery will depend on leaders of integrity who can steer the nation through challenging times.

The President emphasized that Gordhan’s contributions to the South African Revenue Service (SARS) and his tenure as Minister of Finance were instrumental in the transformation of the country’s financial systems. Gordhan was a crucial figure during the country’s most difficult economic periods, and his work in navigating South Africa through financial challenges demonstrated his dedication to the country’s well-being.

Political Tributes and Mixed Reactions

While Gordhan was widely praised for his contributions, reactions to his passing have been mixed. Political parties such as the Democratic Alliance (DA) and ActionSA have expressed their condolences, praising his work in public service and his role in fighting corruption. DA leader John Steenhuisen described Gordhan as “a leader who stood firm against corruption and always sought the best for South Africa.”

However, the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) were less complimentary in their reflections. The EFF reiterated their longstanding criticism of Gordhan, particularly regarding his role in the South African economy and allegations of protecting certain factions within the government. While acknowledging his role in the anti-apartheid struggle, the EFF stated they would not mourn his passing. This stark contrast highlights the divisive nature of Gordhan’s legacy in some political circles .

The Legacy of Service and Integrity

Throughout his life, Gordhan remained dedicated to serving the people of South Africa, and President Ramaphosa stressed that Gordhan’s legacy should inspire others to continue fighting for justice and equality. “Pravin Gordhan’s spear has fallen. Let us together pick it up,” the President said, calling on South Africans to continue the work that Gordhan had started.

In a moving conclusion to his tribute, President Ramaphosa quoted Indian poet Rabindranath Tagore, stating: “Give me the strength lightly to bear my joys and sorrows. Give me the strength to make my love fruitful in service.” This sentiment captured the essence of Gordhan’s life—a life marked by selfless service and a deep love for the people of South Africa.
