NEW YORK – President Cyril Ramaphosa touched down at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York on Saturday, where he will be leading the South African delegation at the 79th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). This high-level gathering brings together Heads of State and Government from around the world to address pressing global challenges and reaffirm commitments to multilateral cooperation.
Accompanied by International Relations and Cooperation Minister Ronald Lamola and other key officials, President Ramaphosa is set to engage in a packed agenda over the coming days, starting with the High-Level Summit of the Future (SoTF) on 22 September 2024. During this flagship event, world leaders are expected to adopt the Pact for the Future, a pivotal document that aims to strengthen global governance and tackle the gaps exposed by recent global shocks, including pandemics and climate change.
Key Issues on Ramaphosa’s Agenda
President Ramaphosa’s speech, scheduled for the opening day of the General Assembly on 24 September 2024, will focus on several crucial issues. These include:
• International Peace and Security: Ramaphosa is expected to advocate for global efforts to maintain peace, particularly in conflict zones where multilateral intervention is critical.
• Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): As the world inches closer to the 2030 deadline, the President will stress the need for accelerated action to meet the SDGs, particularly in African countries where progress has been hampered by economic and social challenges.
• Climate Change and COP29: With COP29 scheduled to take place in Baku later this year, Ramaphosa will also highlight the urgent need for international collaboration to combat climate change and enhance sustainability efforts.
• Pandemic Preparedness and Health: Drawing lessons from the COVID-19 pandemic, Ramaphosa will call for stronger global health systems to ensure the world is better prepared for future pandemics.
Attracting Investment to South Africa
While in New York, President Ramaphosa will also meet with international business leaders to promote foreign direct investment in South Africa. This forms part of his broader strategy to boost economic recovery and development following the impacts of the pandemic and ongoing global economic uncertainty.
South Africa’s Role at UNGA
This year, the African Group holds a significant position at the General Assembly, with former Cameroonian Prime Minister Philemon Yang serving as the President of the 79th Session. The theme for this year’s session, “Unity in diversity, for the advancement of peace, sustainable development and human dignity for everyone everywhere,” aligns closely with South Africa’s foreign policy objectives, particularly its commitment to multilateralism and the empowerment of developing nations.
In addition to his speech and participation in high-level meetings, Ramaphosa is expected to engage in bilateral discussions with various global leaders, with a focus on strengthening South Africa’s diplomatic and economic ties.
