South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has declared that Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi, the Prince of KwaPhindangene and Traditional Prime Minister to the Zulu Monarch and Nation, will be honored with a Special Official Funeral Category 1. The funeral will take place at Ulundi in KwaZulu-Natal.

Prince Buthelezi, who passed away at the age of 95, was announced by President Ramaphosa on Saturday. As preparations unfold for memorial events, the President extends his deepest condolences to the Royal Household, friends, colleagues, and associates of the late leader, both nationally and internationally.

According to a statement from the Presidency on Tuesday, the government’s State, Official and Provincial Official Funeral Policy awards Special Official Funerals, Category 1, to individuals with extraordinary credentials as designated by the President of South Africa.

In addition to the special status of the funeral, military honors will also be included.

As a gesture of national mourning, President Ramaphosa has ordered that flags be flown at half-mast at flag stations across the country starting from today, Tuesday, September 12, 2023, until the evening of the funeral.

Prince Buthelezi made significant contributions to South Africa during his lifetime. He served as the country’s first Home Affairs Minister and was the founder and President Emeritus of the Inkatha Freedom Party.
