President Cyril Ramaphosa with the President of the European Council, Charles Michel
President Cyril Ramaphosa engaged in a bilateral telephone conversation with the President of the European Council, Charles Michel. The dialogue unfolded over a myriad of bilateral, regional, and global issues, epitomising the robust relationship between South Africa and the European Union.
According to an official statement released by the Presidency, the discourse between the leaders was marked by positivity and a forward-looking outlook. This conversation underscored the importance of enhanced engagement to foster global peace and uphold international law.
Strengthening Bilateral Relations
The two presidents collectively welcomed the recent South Africa-European Union Political and Security Dialogue Forum, along with the Human Rights Dialogue held in Pretoria on 26 and 27 February 2024. These forums marked critical steps towards deepening mutual cooperation, with an aim to bolster stability and prosperity on both sides.
Upholding International Law and Sovereignty
A key point of discussion revolved around the principles of the United Nations Charter, focusing on sovereignty and territorial integrity. The leaders emphasised these principles, particularly in the context of Ukraine.
The Middle East also featured prominently in their conversation. Ramaphosa and Michel called for an urgent ceasefire in Gaza, release of hostages, and the provision of humanitarian assistance. They highlighted the International Court of Justice’s orders in this regard, underscoring the urgency of a resolution.
Addressing African Conflicts
Issues within the African continent were also on the agenda. The presidents highlighted the necessity of a political resolution to the tensions in the Democratic Republic of Congo. In addition, they called for an “immediate and durable ceasefire” in Sudan, stressing the need for long-term peace and stability.
Global Cooperation and Future Endeavours
Looking ahead, the leaders agreed on the importance of closer cooperation leading up to South Africa’s upcoming Presidency of the G20 in 2025. They discussed collaborative efforts to safeguard and promote multilateral cooperation and the international rules-based order.
The conversation also touched upon the strategic partnership that has delivered economic and social benefits for both South Africa and the European Union. There was an emphasis on recent engagements in Brussels and Pretoria, aimed at expanding partnerships into new areas of mutual interest such as green hydrogen, critical minerals, and vaccine production. Such initiatives are poised to support regional integration and the African Continental Free Trade Agreement.
A Strategic Partnership
In conclusion, the dialogue reaffirmed the close and ongoing cooperation between South Africa and the European Union. The statement indicated that both leaders have agreed to organise a bilateral Summit at the earliest opportunity, setting the stage for continued collaboration and strengthened ties.
