President Cyril Ramaphosa

President Cyril Ramaphosa has told the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) that South Africa will not remain silent and watch as apartheid is perpetrated against others.

In his address to the 79th session of the UNGA on Tuesday, 24 September 2024, President Ramaphosa drew on South Africa’s own historical experiences to underscore his message. He stressed that apartheid, the system his country once fought so hard to dismantle, continues to manifest in Palestine and must be eradicated. His remarks, delivered in New York, marked a powerful call for collective global action to end the suffering endured by Palestinians under Israeli occupation. He likened their plight to South Africa’s past, emphasizing that the apartheid system in Palestine was a continuation of decades of oppression and dehumanization.

South Africa’s Submission to the ICJ on the Israel-Palestine Conflict

President Ramaphosa also announced that South Africa would be submitting a Memorial to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in October 2024. This submission forms part of a broader legal challenge to hold Israel accountable for alleged genocide against the Palestinian people. The Memorial will present evidence and legal arguments to support South Africa’s claims, marking a significant step in the nation’s stance on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Ramaphosa reiterated that a two-state solution, with East Jerusalem as the capital of a Palestinian state, was the only path toward lasting peace in the region .

Addressing Global Conflicts Beyond Palestine

In addition to addressing the Israel-Palestine conflict, President Ramaphosa called for greater global efforts to resolve other ongoing conflicts in regions such as the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Sudan, Yemen, Ukraine, and the Sahel. He expressed South Africa’s continued commitment to working with international partners to foster peace and security. He particularly emphasized the importance of addressing the root causes of these conflicts, advocating for sustained dialogue and diplomacy.

UN Security Council Reform

A significant part of Ramaphosa’s speech focused on the need for urgent reform of the UN Security Council. He pointed out that the council’s structure, unchanged since its inception 78 years ago, is no longer representative of the global community. Africa, home to 1.4 billion people, remains excluded from its key decision-making structures, a situation Ramaphosa deemed unjust and counterproductive to achieving lasting peace.

Ramaphosa criticized the Security Council for failing to fulfill its mandate of maintaining international peace and security, particularly in Africa, where many conflicts continue to rage. He called for a more inclusive and representative council that would allow the voices of all nations to be heard and considered in global decisions .

Economic Sustainability and Minerals Sector

On the economic front, the South African President also addressed the critical importance of minerals, energy, and manufacturing in driving global growth. Speaking at the African Minerals Forum on the sidelines of the UNGA, Ramaphosa highlighted the role that South Africa’s rich mineral reserves could play in promoting sustainability and attracting investment. He stressed that improving the business environment in key sectors was vital for South Africa’s economic development .
