Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi has appointed Vuyiswa Ramokgopa, RISE Mzansi’s National Chairperson and current MEC for Agriculture and Rural Development, as the Acting Premier of Gauteng. Ramokgopa will assume the role from Sunday, 22 September 2024, to Saturday, 28 September 2024, while Premier Lesufi embarks on a government business trip to Germany. The appointment was confirmed on Saturday by Sizwe Pamla, the Premier’s spokesperson.
Ramokgopa’s selection as Acting Premier marks a significant moment, aligning with the provisions of the South African Constitution, specifically Section 131 (1)(a) and Section 13 of the 1996 Constitution. These sections outline the process for appointing an Acting Premier when the sitting Premier is temporarily unavailable. As Acting Premier, Ramokgopa will take on all the responsibilities, duties, and authority associated with the role, ensuring the seamless operation of the Gauteng provincial government during Lesufi’s absence.
A Rising Star in Gauteng Politics
Ramokgopa’s appointment as Acting Premier is another feather in the cap of this rising political star. She was appointed to Lesufi’s executive council in July 2024 as the MEC for Agriculture and Rural Development. At the age of 38, she became the youngest member of Lesufi’s cabinet, a decision that drew praise for its inclusivity and commitment to empowering young leaders within the provincial government. Her political journey has been swift and impressive, having only entered the political arena a year prior .
Before joining Lesufi’s executive team, Ramokgopa spent over 15 years in entrepreneurship, leading various organizations. Her experience in both the business and political sectors positions her as a leader with a unique blend of practical and strategic insight, which will be crucial as she steps into this temporary leadership role .
The Importance of Her Appointment
Ramokgopa’s new responsibilities include overseeing critical provincial matters and ensuring that all departments continue to function efficiently. This period will also serve as a testament to her leadership skills as she manages the operations of one of South Africa’s most populous provinces. Her role as MEC for Agriculture and Rural Development has already placed her at the forefront of tackling issues such as food security and rural development in Gauteng. In her short tenure, she has focused on boosting small-scale farming and improving agricultural sustainability .
This opportunity to serve as Acting Premier will also allow her to demonstrate her ability to handle broader provincial concerns. Her leadership during this time could pave the way for even more significant roles in the future, both within the Gauteng government and possibly on a national scale.
Premier Lesufi’s Germany Trip
Premier Panyaza Lesufi’s trip to Germany is reportedly focused on government business, though specific details of the visit have not been disclosed at this time. International engagements like these are essential for fostering relationships that can lead to investments, trade agreements, and collaborative efforts that benefit both South Africa and Gauteng specifically. While Lesufi is away, Ramokgopa will be tasked with ensuring that the province’s daily governance runs smoothly.
