Free State Premier Mxolisi Dukwana launched the Hemp Mega Project at Springfontein Agri-Park on Monday, 20 May 2024. This initiative follows through on one of the key projects outlined during the recent State of the Province Address. The unveiling marks a pivotal step in addressing the high unemployment rates plaguing the Xhariep District, which is ideally suited for controlled cannabis production.

The “Industrial Hempowerment” project is poised to serve as a processing hub for hemp within the province. Designed to act as an incubator for hemp (Cannabis Sativa) ventures, this project aims to harness the agricultural potential of Xhariep.

The launch event featured an impressive exhibition of hemp products by esteemed companies such as Hash, InCura, and the Cheeba Cannabis Academy. These enterprises showcased the vast array of products that can be derived from hemp, including clothing, batteries, medicinal items, and herbs.

Following the exhibition, the day’s programme transitioned to a Community Engagement meeting. This platform provided local residents with vital information about the project and elucidated how they stand to benefit from it. Premier Dukwana was instrumental in educating the community about the multifaceted uses of hemp, reinforcing the enormous potential of the billion-dollar industry.

Amongst the dignitaries present were DESTEA MEC Thabo Meeko, Executive Mayor of Xhariep District Municipality, Cllr. Irene Mehlomakhulu, and Mayor of Kopanong Local Municipality, Cllr. Xolani Tseletsele. Their presence underscored the project’s importance and the unified commitment of various levels of government to drive development in the region.

“This project is a testament to our dedication to fostering sustainable economic growth in Xhariep. The potential of the hemp industry is vast, and by creating a nurturing environment for its development, we envision a brighter, more prosperous future for our people,” stated Premier Dukwana.
