North West Premier Lazarus Kagiso Mokgosi has expressed optimism ahead of President Cyril Ramaphosa and his Cabinet’s upcoming visit to the province, scheduled for Friday, 12 September 2025, in Rustenburg.

According to Premier Mokgosi, the high-level engagement forms part of the National Government Programme of Action 2025, which seeks to strengthen Inter-Governmental Relations (IGR) and ensure the effective implementation of the priorities outlined in the Medium-Term Development Plan (MTDP 2024-2029).

Driving Economic Transformation Through the Growth and Development Strategy

Premier Mokgosi reaffirmed that the province is taking concrete steps to address unemployment and poverty through its newly adopted Growth and Development Strategy.

This strategy focuses on repositioning the provincial economy by leveraging its main economic drivers: mining, agriculture, and tourism. Central to this effort is the full operationalisation of the Bojanala Special Economic Zone (SEZ).

“As part of addressing challenges of unemployment and poverty, the province recently adopted the Growth and Development Strategy. It is centred on repositioning the provincial economy through its main economic drivers which are mining, agriculture, and tourism. This includes prioritising the full functioning of the Bojanala Special Economic Zone,” said Mokgosi.

The Bojanala SEZ has already attracted investment commitments exceeding R200 billion, with the potential to create close to 20,000 jobs once it secures its operational licence.

“The SEZ once operational will go a long way in assisting the province address the scourge of unemployment and poverty afflicting our communities. I have met several mining companies since the start of this year who have expressed interest in ensuring the SEZ succeeds and achieves its intended objectives,” Mokgosi added.

Accelerated Service Delivery Through Thuntsha Lerole

In addition to economic growth, the Premier emphasised the importance of strengthening local governance to drive sustainable development. The province recently launched the fifth phase of the Accelerated Service Delivery Programme, Thuntsha Lerole, designed to help municipalities tackle persistent service delivery challenges.

“Local government is critical towards addressing challenges bedevilling our developmental trajectory. Without proper infrastructure, we will not be able to address these challenges, hence the Accelerated Service Delivery Programme initiative,” Mokgosi explained.

The Premier stressed that infrastructure and municipal efficiency remain cornerstones of development, and that collaboration across all levels of government is vital.

Anticipated Outcomes of the Presidential Visit

Premier Mokgosi highlighted that the President’s visit will provide a platform for the province to demonstrate its progress and appeal for further national government support to unlock economic and social development initiatives.

“We will use this visit to highlight areas which require support and collaboration from the national government to unlock growth and development initiatives in the province,” Mokgosi concluded.

The visit is expected to showcase key provincial priorities, including:
• Advancing the Bojanala SEZ as a catalyst for job creation.
• Strengthening mining, agriculture, and tourism as engines of economic growth.
• Addressing service delivery backlogs through Thuntsha Lerole.
• Enhancing inter-governmental cooperation for sustainable development.
