PRASA
The Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA) has taken a strong stance against fraud following the dismissal of an employee who was involved in fraudulent activities. The agency has made it clear that it is committed to dealing with fraudulent behavior within its organization.
The discovery of irregular payments during routine financial reviews led to the escalation of the matter to senior leadership. PRASA’s Internal Audit department engaged an independent supplier to conduct a forensic investigation. The investigation revealed three fraudulent transactions, totaling R9,547,000, executed by a PRASA employee.
Upon being interrogated, the employee admitted to committing the fraud and returned the stolen funds. PRASA immediately suspended the employee and reported the matter to the South African Police Services (SAPS). However, the internal investigation did not stop there. It uncovered additional fraudulent transactions amounting to R24,976,747.30, all executed by the same individual.
The employee confessed to these additional unauthorized transactions during further interrogation. As a result, the employee was dismissed, and a fraud case is pending against them. The investigation also highlighted internal control deficiencies that contributed to the fraud. In response, PRASA has implemented enhanced measures to strengthen internal controls and prevent future incidents of fraud.
PRASA’s management has reaffirmed its commitment to upholding integrity, transparency, and accountability. The agency will remain vigilant against potential financial irregularities and will take swift action to address any cases of fraud that may arise in the future.
