Johannesburg, South Africa — As the excitement builds for the highly anticipated Rugby Championship Test Match between the Springboks and the All Blacks at Emirates Airline Park, also known as Ellis Park Stadium, rugby fans can rest assured that their journey to and from the game will be as thrilling as the match itself. The Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA) and the Gautrain have joined forces to provide an integrated and seamless transport service, ensuring that over 62,000 spectators can travel safely and conveniently to the stadium on Saturday, 31 August 2024.
An Integrated Transport Solution for a World-Class Event
The collaboration between PRASA and Gautrain is a significant step in promoting the use of public transportation for major events in Gauteng. This initiative is designed to alleviate traffic congestion, reduce environmental impact, and enhance the overall fan experience by offering a reliable and efficient alternative to road travel.
Gautrain’s Extended Service Hours:
Gautrain has extended its operating hours to accommodate the influx of fans traveling to the match. Trains will run every 30 minutes, with the last train departing from Park Station at 10:00 PM. Fans can board the Gautrain at various stations, including Hatfield, Pretoria, Centurion, Midrand, Marlboro, Sandton, and Rosebank, or from OR Tambo International Airport with a necessary transfer at Sandton Station.
PRASA’s People’s Train:
Fans holding valid match tickets can enjoy a free ride on PRASA’s Metrorail service, which will operate at 15-minute intervals between Park Station and Ellis Park Station from 10:30 AM to 9:30 PM. Marshalls will be on standby at Park Station to guide fans to the PRASA platforms, ensuring a smooth transition between the Gautrain and PRASA services.
Safety and Security at the Forefront
Given the large crowds expected at the game, safety and security are top priorities. The South African Police Service (SAPS), Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD), and security teams from both Gautrain and PRASA will be deployed at Park Station, on the trains, and around the stadium precinct to ensure a safe environment for all spectators. This coordinated effort is intended to provide peace of mind for fans as they enjoy the match.
Promoting Sustainability and Convenience
This integrated transport service not only promises to ease traffic congestion but also reflects a broader commitment by the Gauteng Provincial Government and the City of Johannesburg to promote sustainable urban transport solutions. Minister of Transport Barbara Creecy emphasized the importance of such collaborations in building sustainable cities and making public transport a viable option for all residents and visitors.
Fans are encouraged to take advantage of this service to avoid the typical traffic delays associated with large events and to contribute to a more eco-friendly mode of transport. Additionally, PRASA has refurbished the Ellis Park Station in time for the event, demonstrating the agency’s ongoing commitment to restoring and enhancing commuter rail services across the country.
