Walter Sisulu University
By Nkosana Khumalo
The bail hearing for Manelisi Mampane, the Walter Sisulu University (WSU) residence manager accused of murdering student Sisonke Mbolekwa during a campus protest, has been postponed to Tuesday, 6 May 2025, due to a power failure at the Mthatha Magistrate’s Court.
Incident Overview
On 15 April 2025, a protest erupted at WSU’s Mthatha campus over deteriorating living conditions in student residences. During the demonstration, Mampane allegedly shot and killed 24-year-old Mbolekwa, a Bachelor of Education student, and injured two others, Ntando Gqetywa and Lizwa Ndzumo. Both injured students received medical treatment and have since been discharged.
Legal Proceedings and Charges
Mampane faces charges of murder, attempted murder, and possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition. He was arrested on 17 April and made his initial court appearance on 22 April. The bail hearing, initially scheduled for 2 May, was deferred due to the unexpected power outage.
University and Community Response
In response to the incident, WSU’s council placed Mampane on precautionary suspension and initiated an independent commission of inquiry, led by retired Constitutional Court Judge Chris Jafta. The commission aims to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting and assess the university’s handling of student grievances.
The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) has also launched an inquiry into the use of force during student protests, focusing on the legality and appropriateness of actions taken by university staff and security personnel.
Family and Student Reactions
Mbolekwa’s family has expressed dissatisfaction with the court’s decision to prohibit media coverage of the proceedings, arguing that transparency is essential for justice. They have filed an appeal to overturn the ruling, emphasizing the public interest in the case.
Students and community members have held demonstrations outside the court, demanding that Mampane be denied bail and calling for accountability from university officials.
Next Steps
The bail hearing is now set for 6 May 2025. The outcomes of the independent commission’s investigation and the SAHRC’s inquiry are anticipated to provide further insights into the incident and inform future policies regarding campus safety and student welfare.
