POPCRU
The Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union (POPCRU) has announced its new national leadership, following successful elections at its 10th National Congress in Durban.
The newly elected President, Thulani Ngwenya, will be succeeding , Dr. Zizamele Cebekhulu-Makhaza, who served diligently as the union’s president for an impressive 27 years. Dr. Cebekhulu-Makhaza decided not to stand for re-election, making way for new leadership.
Joining Ngwenya in the national leadership are Mosadiwamaje Veronica Mokokong as 1st Deputy President, Zamikhaya Skade as 2nd Deputy President, Jeffrey Dladla as General Secretary, Chakale Amelia Mahlatsi as 1st General Secretary, Boitumelo Pheleo as 2nd General Secretary, and Thulani Nsele as National Treasurer.
Dr. Cebekhulu-Makhaza spoke highly of Ngwenya, praising his dedication, selflessness, and commitment to serving members and the organization. Ngwenya has over 30 years of service within the union and has played a significant role in shaping POPCRU into the formidable union it is today.
Ngwenya’s influence within POPCRU’s leadership has been significant since he joined the union in 1991. He has gradually risen through the ranks, serving in local, provincial, and national positions. With a post-graduate degree in Labor Law from North-West University and additional training in conflict management, project management, and leadership, Ngwenya is well-equipped for his new role.
Looking ahead, Ngwenya aims to see POPCRU grow as a stakeholder in the criminal justice cluster. The union will leverage its knowledge and expertise to contribute to new policy directions and foster enhanced synergies within the system.
Additionally, POPCRU is committed to expanding its membership base beyond the police, traffic, and correctional services sectors to include other workers within the criminal justice system.
In the short term, the union will address the detrimental effects of government austerity measures on the criminal justice cluster, particularly the South African Police Service (SAPS), which hinder the fight against crime. POPCRU will also advocate for the nationalization of traffic officers to promote uniformity and effectiveness across the country.
Despite the challenges ahead, Ngwenya expresses his gratitude to Dr. Cebekhulu-Makhaza for his leadership over the past 27 years. Under his guidance, POPCRU has become a self-sustaining union with an impressive investment wing worth over R500 million.
