Polokwane City delivered a stunning blow to Mamelodi Sundowns on Sunday, securing a 1-0 win in front of their home fans at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium. This victory not only halted Sundowns’ unbeaten run but also showcased Polokwane’s resilience and determination to make a mark in this season’s Betway Premiership.
Polokwane City entered the match as underdogs, facing the league giants who had won four of their previous five matches. Despite this, the “Rise and Shine” showed early promise, controlling the game’s tempo and pressing Sundowns in both halves. Although the first 45 minutes ended without a goal, Polokwane displayed a robust defensive strategy that neutralised Sundowns’ attacks effectively.
First Half Highlights
The game kicked off with Sundowns pushing aggressively in the first five minutes, as they zipped the ball around with quick passes. Rushine De Reuck led the initial offensive, creating openings, but Polokwane’s defence, led by Nikani and Matuludi, responded with solid clearances. By the 19th minute, Sundowns had earned a corner taken by Marcelo Allende, but Rushine’s attempt veered off target, marking one of Sundowns’ few attacking highlights in the first half.
Polokwane, though outmatched in possession, displayed disciplined defence. The midfield’s hard work, coupled with a solid backline, left Sundowns with limited options. As halftime approached, Sundowns struggled to find space, unable to produce a single shot on target by the break.
Second Half Changes and Polokwane’s Dominance
In the second half, Polokwane intensified their efforts. Coach Phuti Mohafe’s side made tactical adjustments, increasing their counterattacks, which kept Sundowns on the defensive. The rhythm of the game picked up pace, with Polokwane launching a series of quick breaks that caught Sundowns off-guard.
Substitutions on both sides brought new energy to the field. Sundowns introduced Teboho Mokoena and Sphelele Mkhulise, hoping to add creative options, while Polokwane stayed focused on retaining their defensive shape. In the 65th minute, Oswin Appollis set up Bonginkosi Dhlamini with a well-placed pass, but Hlayisi Chauke missed a close-range header that could have given Polokwane the lead.
As the game wore on, Sundowns appeared to struggle with the tempo. Tashreeq Matthews had to be stretchered off after a twisted ankle, adding to Sundowns’ frustrations. Polokwane capitalised on Sundowns’ disarray and maintained pressure until they finally broke through.
Nikani’s Decisive Goal and the Final Moments
The match’s only goal came in the 82nd minute when Polokwane captain Bulelani Nikani managed to direct a free-kick past Sundowns’ veteran goalkeeper, Denis Onyango. The goal ignited celebrations among Polokwane’s fans, who sensed that an upset was on the cards. Sundowns, though taken by surprise, attempted a late rally, with Khuliso Mudau coming close in added time. However, Polokwane’s defence remained impenetrable, successfully securing their 1-0 lead until the final whistle.
Polokwane’s Tactical Edge and Key Takeaways
Polokwane’s disciplined approach highlighted their tactical growth under Mohafe’s leadership. From tight defence to quick counterattacks, Polokwane exploited Sundowns’ weaknesses effectively. This win marks Polokwane’s first victory over Sundowns since 2017 and elevates them to fourth place on the table with 10 points.
Sundowns, now second with 12 points, trail behind Orlando Pirates, who top the table with 15 points after their win this weekend. This loss has added pressure on Sundowns, who will need to regroup and strategise to keep up with the fast-paced title race.
Sundowns’ Struggles and Absent Players
Notably, Sundowns played without some of their key players. Goalkeeper Ronwen Williams missed the game as he travelled to France for the prestigious Ballon d’Or Yashin Trophy ceremony, where he was nominated among the top 10 goalkeepers globally. Additionally, Keagan Johannes, Lesiba Nku, and Themba Zwane were sidelined due to injuries, which left gaps in Sundowns’ line-up .
Williams’ absence impacted Sundowns, as they struggled to maintain defensive solidity and organise counterattacks. Onyango’s performance was commendable, but he could not prevent Nikani’s goal, which sealed Sundowns’ fate.
What This Means for the Betway Premiership Race
This season’s title race is shaping up to be one of the most competitive in recent years. Orlando Pirates remain undefeated, leading the standings with a perfect record from five games. Sundowns, now with one loss, must regroup to stay in contention, especially with other teams like Polokwane City and Kaizer Chiefs showing strong performances.
For Polokwane City, the win is a morale booster, proving they can challenge top-tier teams. Their rise to fourth place places them in a competitive position early in the season, setting them up as dark horses in the title race.
