In the early hours of Wednesday, 12 February 2025, 35-year-old inmate Yanga Wayithi was rearrested following his escape from Pollsmoor Correctional Centre in Cape Town. Wayithi, who was serving a six-month sentence for theft and trespassing, had managed to flee the facility on Sunday, 9 February 2025.

The Department of Correctional Services (DCS) confirmed that Wayithi was apprehended at approximately 01:30 am on Wednesday. He is now back in custody at Pollsmoor and will face additional charges related to his escape from lawful custody.

Wayithi had been assigned to a work team responsible for maintaining the prison grounds when he made his escape. The specifics of how he managed to elude security measures remain under investigation.

National Commissioner of Correctional Services, Makgothi Thobakgale, commended the swift action taken by law enforcement officials. “This arrest reaffirms our commitment to upholding the integrity of the correctional system. We remain resolute in ensuring that all offenders are held accountable, and that public safety remains our top priority,” he stated.

The DCS has initiated a full-scale investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding Wayithi’s escape. “Appropriate measures will be taken against any lapses identified. Additionally, security protocols at Pollsmoor Correctional Centre are under review to prevent similar incidents in the future,” said DCS spokesperson Singabakho Nxumalo.

This incident comes as the DCS appeared before Parliament’s Correctional Services Portfolio Committee, assuring lawmakers that it had met the requirements set by the Public Protector to devise an escape prevention plan. The department emphasized its commitment to enhancing security measures and preventing future escapes.
