Durban, South Africa – In a significant crackdown on criminal activities, law enforcement authorities in KwaZulu-Natal have seized counterfeit US dollars valued at over R4 million and arrested more than 100 undocumented foreigners during a major operation near Durban’s inner city on Tuesday, 27 August 2024.
The raid, part of a broader effort to restore order in the city, was carried out in the early hours of the morning, targeting several hijacked buildings in the Point Road area. The operation, led by KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, was supported by various agencies, including the Metro Police, Home Affairs, and the office of the Premier.
During the raid, police uncovered a significant amount of counterfeit US dollars, hundreds of rounds of ammunition, and a stash of drugs. The operation focused on buildings that had been illegally occupied, with some having illegal connections to water and electricity, contributing to the municipality’s financial strain. These buildings have long been under scrutiny for harboring criminal activities, including drug trafficking and illegal immigration.
Lieutenant General Mkhwanazi emphasized the severity of the situation, highlighting the ongoing efforts to curb illegal activities in Durban. “This operation is part of our ongoing efforts to rid the city of criminal elements that have taken root in these hijacked buildings. The seizure of counterfeit currency and ammunition is a significant blow to these criminal networks,” Mkhwanazi stated.
Premier Thamsanqa Ntuli also weighed in on the operation, reiterating the government’s commitment to restoring Durban as the economic hub of KwaZulu-Natal. “We are determined to reclaim our city from criminal elements. These raids are just the beginning, and we will continue to work with all relevant stakeholders to ensure that Durban becomes a safe and prosperous city for all its residents,” Ntuli said during a media briefing following the operation.
The operation also saw the arrest of several individuals wanted for serious crimes, including a suspect linked to multiple rape cases in Umlazi. The police are now focusing on processing the undocumented foreigners, who are likely to face deportation following a review of their legal status.
The eThekwini Metropolitan Municipality has identified 76 buildings in the Durban CBD as derelict, abandoned, hijacked, or overcrowded. Plans are underway to address these issues comprehensively, with a technical task team established to manage and rehabilitate these properties.
