Pastor Mboro

The Gauteng police are investigating a shocking incident involving Paseka Motsoeneng, known as Pastor Mboro, where armed men terrorised pupils and teachers at Matshidiso Primary School in Katlehong. The violent incident occurred on Monday when men wielding pangas and firearms forcibly took two pupils from the school.

The police have stated that they are currently taking statements from all parties involved and that an arrest is imminent. They plan to release a detailed statement once they have completed their initial process.

In response to this incident, Gauteng MEC for Education, Matome Chiloane, vehemently condemned the actions of these “thugs” and called for their immediate apprehension. Chiloane emphasized that such violent and appalling behavior has no place in schools or society.

Incident Overview

According to a media statement from the Gauteng Department of Education’s Spokesperson, Steve Mabona, the incident stemmed from a conflict between two families over the custody of two young boys enrolled at the school. The dispute has been escalating since the death of the children’s mother in April, leading to tensions between the paternal and maternal sides of the family.

On the day of the incident, the children’s father met with the school principal in the morning. Later, the maternal grandmother, who is the legal guardian of the children, also met with the principal to discuss a conflict that arose during a meeting at the paternal grandfather’s house, who is the well-known South African pastor.

Following this, the school’s Deputy Principal and staff refused to release the children without the grandmother’s permission. This led to the arrival of Pastor Mbhoro and bodyguards armed with weapons. The father, accompanied by the pastor and two men, one armed with pangas and the other with an assault rifle, attempted to take the children from the school. Teachers, acting on instructions from the grandmother, tried to prevent this, but the pastor brandished a panga, allowing the father to leave with the children.

Community and Police Response

The community became involved after realising the commotion at the school. The school’s principal and the School Governing Body (SGB) reported the matter to the police, who have since deployed the Child Protection Unit to mediate the situation. Psycho-Social Support will be provided to affected teachers and learners to help them cope with the trauma resulting from this incident.

MEC Chiloane assured the public of the Department’s commitment to justice, stating, “The safety and well-being of our learners and educators are of utmost priority. Such acts of violence and intimidation not only undermine the foundation of our education system but also have the potential to traumatise the entire school community. The Department is committed to ensuring that justice is served in this matter.”

The Gauteng Department of Education urges anyone with information to contact their spokesperson, Steve Mabona, at 072 574 3860, or the spokesperson for Gauteng Education MEC Matome Chiloane, Xolani Mkhwethe, at 084 513 9285.
