Johannesburg – The South African Police Service (SAPS) has rescued a businessman and arrested eight kidnappers, including three Tanzanian nationals, in Johannesburg. This rescue operation highlights the ongoing efforts of SAPS to combat transnational organised crime syndicates.

The businessman was abducted on 5 July 2024 at a mosque in Helderkruin, Roodepoort. He was safely rescued from a house in Lenasia on Wednesday, marking the culmination of a meticulously planned operation by SAPS’s anti-kidnapping task team.

Operation and Arrests

Last week, the task team made their first arrests, apprehending two suspects. On Wednesday, intelligence led the multidisciplinary team to multiple locations, including a hotel in East Gate and two apartments in Fourways. Here, they arrested six more suspects and seized drugs suspected to be crystal meth, valued at an astonishing R300 million.

High-Profile Visit

The crime scenes were visited by the National Commissioner of the SAPS, General Fannie Masemola, accompanied by the Deputy National Commissioner for Crime Detection, Lieutenant General Shadrack Sibiya, and the Provincial Commissioner of Gauteng, Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni. Their presence underscored the seriousness of the operation and the commitment of SAPS to dismantle organised crime networks.

Commendation from the Top

General Masemola praised the efforts of the task team, saying, “Well done to the team. Our men and women in blue remain hard at work in taking down syndicates involved in dealing and the trafficking of drugs.” He added, “Commendable progress has been registered in recent weeks and we owe those successes to our dedicated police officers and our partners in crime, including private security. We will continue to come after those who are involved in the illicit trade of drug trafficking.”

Ongoing Operations

Masemola is scheduled to brief the nation this morning on the ongoing operations aimed at clamping down on all forms of criminality across the country. This briefing is expected to provide further insights into the comprehensive strategies being deployed to ensure the safety and security of South African citizens.
