Five-year old Ditebogo Junior Phalane
Gauteng police have apprehended two individuals in connection with the heart-wrenching murder of five-year-old Ditebogo Junior Phalane. The young boy tragically lost his life in a brutal car hijacking incident outside his Soshanguve home in Tshwane last week, an event that shook the public consciousness and elicited widespread condemnation.
The Gauteng Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni, disclosed the arrests in an announcement earlier today, marking a critical step forward in the quest for justice for Ditebogo and his bereaved family. Authorities say Ditebogo was caught in the crossfire as his father became the target of armed hijackers. Dreaming of a joyful reunion, he had run outside to greet his father upon his arrival home, only to meet a tragic end. Despite the rapid response and efforts to save him, Ditebogo was pronounced dead at Botshilong Hospital.
Following the tragedy, a swift manhunt ensued, with law enforcement calling on the community for any leads. Mthombeni revealed that their determined pursuit led to the capture of the suspects in separate operations within Soshanguve. Both were found armed with unlicensed firearms, raising suspicions about their involvement in other criminal activities. “In one location, we found a suspect not too far from the crime scene, and we arrested the second suspect [also] in possession of an unlicensed firearm,” Mthombeni stated, noting a particular firearm’s link to an additional car hijacking incident in 2023 in Akasia.
In their relentless search for justice, officers also targeted a third location in hopes of apprehending another suspect. While the individual remains at large, the police recovered a vehicle in Mabopane, suspected to have been employed during the commission of the heinous act against Ditebogo.
The recovered firearm, believed to have been used in the tragedy, adds a crucial piece to the jigsaw as investigators work to untangle the circumstances surrounding the young boy’s untimely death. Highlighting the complex nature of the case, it was disclosed that among the suspects, one is a South African national, with the others suspected to be foreign nationals.
In a show of solidarity and commitment to addressing the root causes of such violent crimes, Police Minister Bheki Cele met with the Phalane family and later conducted a crime prevention imbizo in Jukulyn, Soshanguve. His promise to confront and curtail the rampant crime plaguing the area, particularly the murders, signifies a beacon of hope for the beleaguered community.
