Police Ministry Backs Peaceful March Against Undocumented Foreign Nationals in KZN

Foreign Nationals in KZN

The Ministry of Police has expressed its support for a peaceful march addressing concerns about undocumented foreign nationals, scheduled for 24 March 2025 at 09:00 in King Dinuzulu Gardens, KwaZulu-Natal. In a media statement, Ministry Spokesperson Kamogelo Mogotsi emphasised the government’s commitment to ensuring the safety and security of all South Africans, acknowledging the serious implications that immigration challenges, particularly involving individuals without legal status, have on national security and public safety.

Government’s Stance on Illegal Immigration

The South African government recognises that unlawful entry into the country can contribute to increased criminal activity, placing a strain on law enforcement agencies and affecting the well-being of citizens. The Ministry views the march as a call for enhanced vigilance and action from relevant authorities to address illegal immigration and ensure accountability for those who violate the law. While supporting community efforts to improve safety, the Ministry urges all participants to conduct themselves peacefully and without resorting to violence.

Law Enforcement’s Role and Community Engagement

The South African Police Service (SAPS) remains dedicated to protecting all citizens and upholding the rule of law. Collaborative efforts with immigration authorities and relevant partners are ongoing to address the root causes of illegal immigration and its associated risks. The Ministry encourages concerned individuals and communities to engage constructively with law enforcement to ensure the safety of all residents, regardless of nationality.

Context of Immigration Concerns in South Africa

South Africa has faced challenges related to undocumented foreign nationals, leading to public discourse on immigration policies and enforcement. The presence of individuals without legal status has been linked to various socio-economic issues, prompting calls for comprehensive strategies to manage immigration effectively.

Historical Precedents and Community Responses

In April 2015, South Africans marched against attacks on foreigners, addressing complaints about illegal and undocumented migrants and the takeover of local businesses by foreign nationals. The government responded by acknowledging these concerns and emphasising the need for lawful and peaceful resolutions.

Recent Law Enforcement Actions

Law enforcement agencies have conducted operations targeting undocumented individuals. For instance, over 260 undocumented nationals were arrested in a factory raid in KwaZulu-Natal, highlighting the government’s commitment to addressing illegal immigration.

Balancing Security and Human Rights

While addressing illegal immigration, it is crucial to balance security measures with the protection of human rights. Reports have highlighted instances where undocumented foreigners face challenges, including barriers to accessing essential services and experiences of xenophobic violence. The government continues to work towards solutions that uphold the dignity and rights of all individuals within its borders.
