Police Minister, General Bheki Cele, has reported significant strides made through “Operation Shanela”, resulting in the arrest of over 600,000 individuals linked to various criminal activities across South Africa. During a media briefing held in Pretoria, Cele underscored the crucial role played by Community Policing Forums, community patrollers, and private security personnel in bolstering the operation’s success since its inception in May last year.

Targeted primarily at high-density areas plagued by crime, “Operation Shanela” has been a monumental campaign conducting over 71,000 operations nationwide. The operation’s comprehensive scope has facilitated the confiscation of illegal firearms, drugs, stolen vehicles, and the inspection of unlicensed ventures, alongside curbing driving offences, vehicle thefts, human trafficking, and other crimes.

Cele emphasised that the initiative unfolds under the guidance of Provincial Commissioners across the nation, with operations intensifying from Thursday through to the early hours of Monday. This scheduling aligns with crime pattern analysis, revealing these periods as peak times for criminal activity. “Each week we congregate on Monday to meticulously dissect the national crime scenario, fuelling our strategies in policing crimes effectively,” Cele elucidated.

The Minister acknowledged the indispensable collaborative efforts fuelling “Operation Shanela’s” achievements, spotlighting the support from the SANDF, National and Provincial Traffic Police, Metro Police Departments, Municipal Traffic, the Department of Home Affairs, the South African Revenue Services (SARS), among other government agencies.

Underpinning the campaign’s momentum is the galvanized role of active citizenry in crime prevention and combat. Cele reaffirmed the SAPS’s unwavering commitment to a proactive and intentional crime-fighting approach.

The briefing also saw contributions from crime analysts and Provincial Police Commissioners, who shed light on the palpable reductions in crime rates within their jurisdictions, courtesy of “Operation Shanela”. Despite varied challenges, the Commissioners are adamant about cleansing their provinces of criminal elements, heralding a new dawn in community safety and peace.

Echoing the collective ethos, Cele stated, “the SAPS remains unapologetic in our decisive stand against crime and criminality, asserting our dedication to uphold the safety of all South Africans.”

Through reinforced partnerships and a bolstered resolve, “Operation Shanela” is set to continue its crusade against crime, championing a safer South Africa for all.
