Police Minister Bheki Cele
Police Minister Bheki Cele recently spoke at a briefing in Pretoria, outlining the efforts made by the South African Police Service (SAPS) in the ongoing battle against crime. Through intelligence-led operations and high density operations, thousands of criminals, particularly dangerous and hardened ones, have been apprehended.

The Minister emphasized that these operations have not only led to the recovery of millions of rands in assets, but also to the removal of firearms from the streets.
Cracking Down on Organized Crime:
Cele highlighted the success achieved by the SAPS in disrupting ruthless criminal syndicates operating within the country. Covert operations have resulted in multiple arrests and, in some cases, the deaths of suspects who violently resisted arrest. These meticulous take-downs should instill hope in South Africans that the police force is gaining ground against crime, regardless of the socioeconomic status of the targeted areas.
Police Intelligence and Recent Successes:
The Minister emphasized the role of crime intelligence information in dismantling armed gangs and syndicates. Over the past week, significant victories have been achieved, such as the successful take-down of cash-in-transit heist suspects in Hoedspruit, Limpopo. Four suspects were killed, three were arrested, and weapons and stolen money were seized. Cele expressed gratitude for the collaboration between the SAPS and the Hoedspruit Farmwatchers, which contributed to the success of the operation.
Provincial Highlights:
Cele also provided an overview of notable successes in various provinces. In Gauteng, an 18-year-old Wits University student was rescued from a kidnapping syndicate that targeted the LGBTQI+ community through a popular dating app. A multidisciplinary team led by the Anti-Kidnapping Task Team played a pivotal role in breaking the syndicate known to be involved in over 50 kidnappings.
In KwaZulu-Natal, police responded promptly to a shooting incident in a shopping center in Richards Bay, resulting in the fatal shooting of five men. Within 24 hours, two suspects were traced to an upmarket estate in Ballito, leading to a shootout that resulted in their deaths. The operation involved specialized SAPS units, including the National Intervention Unit.
The Eastern Cape witnessed the arrest of a gang responsible for robbing a store of R1 million worth of jewelry. Following a crime intelligence-driven operation, all 10 suspects were apprehended, and the stolen jewelry and four firearms were recovered. This syndicate has been linked to numerous similar heists across the country.
Additional Successes:
Cele highlighted other successful operations conducted by the SAPS. In Mpumalanga, the illicit mining task team shut down an illegally operated coal mine, seizing mining equipment worth over R60 million and coal worth R12 million. A mine manager was arrested, and a manhunt is underway for the mine owner.
In Khutsong, Gauteng, the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation arrested nine suspects involved in illegal mining. Through a preservation order, 58 properties worth over R17 million were seized, including luxury vehicles and houses. The suspects will be appearing in court later this month.
Lastly, in the Northern Cape, an intelligence-driven operation resulted in the arrest of 867 illegal miners in the Namakwa region. The area, known for its rampant illegal mining activities, is under close monitoring, with the SAPS working in collaboration with other relevant departments to combat this issue.
