110 Women Murdered in KZN Since October: Police Minister Mchunu Speaks Out

Police Minister Senzo Mchunu

18 people were killed in a brutal mass shooting in the Ngobozana village, Lusikisiki, Eastern Cape, over the weekend. On Tuesday, Police Minister Senzo Mchunu, alongside his deputies Cassel Mathale and Polly Boshielo, and National Police Commissioner General Fannie Masemola, are set to visit the crime scene. They will also meet with the bereaved families and members of the local community to address the measures being implemented to ensure justice and improve safety.

According to police reports, the gunmen stormed two homes in the early hours of Saturday morning, killing the victims, most of whom were relatives. Initially, 17 people were confirmed dead, with an 18th victim passing away in the hospital due to critical injuries. The massacre coincided with an ongoing visit by the police ministry, which had already initiated several crime-fighting programmes in the Eastern Cape.

President Ramaphosa Expresses Outrage and Pledges Justice

President Cyril Ramaphosa has expressed his outrage over the massacre, calling it a “heinous crime.” He extended his deepest condolences to the families of the victims and emphasized that no effort would be spared in bringing the perpetrators to justice. “We will not allow criminals to prevail,” the President stated during a recent address, promising swift action from law enforcement .

The Police’s Immediate Response and Community Impact

A manhunt has been launched to track down those responsible for the massacre. Police officers in the Eastern Cape are working tirelessly to follow up on leads. As community members express their grief, calls for greater police visibility and protection in rural areas have intensified. This incident has highlighted the challenges faced by rural communities, which often struggle with inadequate policing and high crime rates .

The police ministry’s visit aims to reassure the Lusikisiki community that steps are being taken to restore security in the area. Following the visit to the crime scene, Minister Mchunu and his team are expected to address the community and outline the plans to prevent future tragedies .

The Growing Crime Wave in Rural Eastern Cape

The Eastern Cape is no stranger to violent crime, particularly in its rural regions. Isolated communities like Ngobozana have seen increasing rates of murders, farm attacks, and robberies. Residents have frequently called for better resources and more police officers to protect them. The police ministry has acknowledged these concerns and aims to implement long-term strategies to enhance safety in the province .

As the investigation continues, the focus remains on ensuring justice for the victims and preventing such tragedies from happening again. Police officials have vowed to keep the public informed of any developments as they work to track down the perpetrators.
