Police Launch Manhunt After Deadly Drive-By Shooting in Reiger Park Claims Six Lives, Leaves Three Injured

Boksburg, Gauteng – Police have launched a full-scale manhunt for suspects behind a brutal drive-by shooting in Reiger Park that left six people dead and three others wounded on Saturday, 1 November 2025. The attack, which happened in broad daylight on Williams Road, has shocked the community and raised fresh concerns about rising violence in the area. Authorities say gunmen in two vehicles opened fire at random, turning a quiet afternoon into a scene of chaos and loss.

Gauteng police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi confirmed the details, noting that the motive remains unclear but investigations are moving forward at full speed. The incident adds to a string of mass shootings across South Africa this year, leaving families grieving and locals calling for stronger action against crime.

Details of the Horrific Attack

The shooting unfolded around 5 PM on Saturday afternoon when two VW Polo vehicles – one silver and one black – drove into the area and began firing shots without warning. Witnesses described a hail of bullets that struck people going about their day, with bodies left scattered on the street. Among the six killed were three men and three women, while the three injured were rushed to hospital. One of the wounded later died, pushing the death toll to six.

Residents spoke of the terror, with one family telling how their brother-in-law was gunned down. They claimed his name was on a hit list, hinting at possible targeted elements amid the random gunfire. The attack happened in Reiger Park, a township in Boksburg on Johannesburg’s East Rand, known for its close-knit community but also plagued by crime.

No arrests have been made yet, and police are piecing together what led to the bloodshed. “The circumstances of the shooting are not clear at this stage; however, investigations are underway and a manhunt has been launched for the suspects,” says Nevhuhulwi.

Police Response and Mobilisation

Acting Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service in Gauteng, Major General Fred Kekana, was quick to respond, arriving at the scene to oversee operations. He has mobilised extra resources, including forensic teams and detectives, to track down those responsible. Under the leadership of local station commander Lieutenant Colonel Bongani Dube, police have stepped up patrols in the area, building on recent drives against drug trafficking and illegal liquor sales.

Constable Johannes Msimanga, another police official, stressed the need for community help. “We cannot fight crime alone,” he said, urging anyone with leads to come forward. The Acting Provincial Commissioner has appealed to the community of Reiger Park to allow law enforcement to do their job and work together with them by reporting any criminal activities on the Crime Stop Line at 08600 10111 or anonymously give tip-offs on MySapsApp.

This response comes amid national efforts to curb violence. Police Minister Senzo Mchunu recently reported a 12.4% drop in murders for the first quarter of 2025 compared to the previous year, though the country still sees an average of 64 murders a day. Experts link drive-by shootings like this to gang rivalries or drug disputes, where vehicles help attackers escape quickly.
