Police Investigate

Police in the North West province have initiated an investigation following the tragic drowning of a Malawian fisherman at Hartbeespoort Dam. The man’s body was recovered on Wednesday after a coordinated search operation.
The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) reported that the fisherman had been angling from his canoe on Tuesday afternoon when he went missing. Upon receiving reports of the missing individual, a multi-agency rescue operation was launched, involving the NSRI, law enforcement, and water policing and diving services.
Craig Lambinon, spokesperson for the NSRI, stated: “Police divers, assisted by the NSRI Hartbeespoort Dam and Strategic Rescue Unit, located and recovered the body of the man from the water. The body has been taken into the care of police and government health forensic pathology services.”
This incident follows a recent tragedy in the same area. On 21 December 2024, the body of a two-year-old boy was found in a subsidiary river east of Hartbeespoort Dam, near the N4 highway. The child had been reported missing the previous afternoon. An extensive search operation, including the NSRI, police divers, and other emergency services, led to the recovery of the toddler’s body.
