Mpumalanga, South Africa – The South African Police Service (SAPS) is actively working to trace a suspect responsible for the rape of two school learners in Mzinti, near Tonga. The victims, aged 16 and 17, were ambushed by an armed man while walking to school for early morning classes on 2 September 2024. The suspect reportedly forced them into nearby bushes at gunpoint, where they were assaulted before being threatened with death should they report the crime.

Upon arriving at school, the brave learners disclosed the incident to their teacher, leading to the involvement of the police. Two counts of rape were officially opened, and the Family Violence, Child Protection, and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit has been assigned to investigate the case. Police have called for heightened vigilance, urging learners to avoid secluded areas and encouraging parents to support their children’s safety Authorities, led by Acting Provincial Commissioner Major General Zeph Mkhwanazi, have assured the community that SAPS is intensifying its search efforts in collaboration with local community structures. “We will not tolerate a situation whereby learners are terrified to go to school,” Mkhwanazi stated, promising swift action and a breakthrough in the case.

The public is urged to provide any information that may assist in apprehending the suspect by contacting the Crime Stop hotline or submitting tips via the
MYSAPSAPP. All information will be handled confidentially, with the option for informants to remain anonymous.
