Police Deny Allegations of Explosions at Stilfontein Shaft 10

South African Police Service (SAPS)

The South African Police Service (SAPS) has firmly denied allegations of an explosion at Stilfontein’s Shaft 10, labelling these claims as “unfounded” and cautioning against the spread of misinformation. National police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe emphasised that after receiving the allegations, the SAPS explosives team conducted an inspection of Shaft 10 and found no evidence of blasting or bombing activities.

SAPS Refutes False Claims

Brigadier Mathe stated that the spreading of misinformation, particularly regarding alleged explosions, is a direct violation of the Explosives Act 26 of 1956, Section 27 (1A). She warned that individuals found guilty of disseminating false information could face prosecution.

“The peddling of false claims about explosions hampers our work and creates unnecessary panic within communities. This is a serious offence, and the SAPS legal team is currently reviewing these matters to take appropriate action,” she said.

Sharing of Personal Information Raises Concerns

The SAPS also expressed concerns over the unauthorised distribution of personal details of suspects involved in the Stilfontein retrieval operation. According to Brigadier Mathe, the SAPS initially shared lists containing the names, nationalities, and birth dates of resurfaced illegal miners with community leaders to promote transparency and assist in identifying next of kin. However, these details were later widely circulated on social media platforms, raising privacy issues.

“This breach of sensitive information is being investigated thoroughly. We urge the public to refrain from sharing unverified or confidential details online,” Mathe added.

Alleged Volunteer Arrest Clarified

Addressing rumours of a volunteer being arrested during the operations, the SAPS clarified that the individual in question was not in police custody but was a parolee who allegedly violated parole conditions. The matter has been referred to the Department of Correctional Services (DCS) for further investigation.

“The allegation that police arrested one of the volunteers is devoid of truth. It is essential to verify such claims before disseminating them to the public,” Mathe explained.

Ongoing Operation Vala Umgodi

The SAPS reaffirmed its commitment to combating illegal mining in Stilfontein through Operation Vala Umgodi. This operation has been pivotal in dismantling illegal mining activities in the region. The initiative includes regular monitoring of shafts, arrests of illegal miners, and confiscation of mining equipment.

Residents’ Concerns Over Shaft 10

Despite SAPS assurances, Stilfontein residents remain concerned about Shaft 10. Many claim that the bodies of zama zamas (illegal miners) who attempted to escape from Shaft 11 are still trapped underground at Shaft 10.

Local volunteer rescuer Mzwandile Mkwayi, who worked alongside Mine Rescue Services (MRS) during the retrieval operations, stated that Shaft 11 had been cleared, but Shaft 10 posed significant challenges.

“Many miners tried to leave through Shaft 10 but did not survive. The terrain is treacherous, with boulders and flooding making it impossible to navigate safely,” Mkwayi explained.

Technical Challenges at Shaft 10

MRS CEO Mannas Fourie highlighted the complexity of the situation, stating that the infrastructure of Shaft 10, constructed with round cement and later blasted, makes rescue operations nearly impossible.

“Unfortunately, our machinery cannot navigate Shaft 10. A comprehensive study is required before any attempt to retrieve remains,” Fourie said.

Community Criticism of Authorities

Community members criticised authorities for not acting sooner, claiming that earlier interventions could have saved lives. Mkwayi noted that pleas for assistance began in October 2024, but no action was taken until recently.

“If authorities had listened to us, many lives could have been spared. The delays have caused unnecessary suffering for families of the victims,” Mkwayi lamented.

Advocacy Groups Raise Concerns

Fatima Vally, a representative of Mining Affected Communities United in Action, expressed concern over the conclusion of retrieval operations. While many illegal miners have been rescued or recovered, she believes that more needs to be done to locate those still missing.

“The retrieval operations may have ended, but the work is far from over. Authorities must address the possibility of bodies trapped in Shaft 10 and ensure closure for affected families,” Vally urged.

Psychological Toll on Rescuers

Volunteers who participated in the retrieval operations have spoken about the psychological trauma they experienced. Mkwayi described the harrowing conditions underground and the lasting impact on his mental health.

“No counselling can erase the horrifying images in my mind. This experience will haunt me forever,” he said.

SAPS Calls for Responsible Reporting

The SAPS has appealed to the public and media to verify information before sharing it. Misinformation not only disrupts ongoing operations but also jeopardises the safety and trust of communities.

“We urge everyone to support our efforts by refraining from spreading unverified claims. Let us work together to bring stability and safety to affected areas,” Brigadier Mathe concluded.
