National Counterfeit Police Unit
The South African Police Services (SAPS) reports that since the establishment of the National Counterfeit unit in November of the previous year, the team has seized fake goods valued at over R300 million. This announcement comes as the police force continues its unyielding campaign against illegal goods in the country.
Police Spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Amanda van Wyk discussed the successes of the unit since its inception, stating, “To date, the team also seized 31 vehicles which were used in the commission of the crime and arrested 23 suspects of different nationalities during a number of takedown operations across the country. In addition, police also seized various manufacturing equipment such as sewing-, embroidery-, and silk-screening machines which were used to counterfeit unbranded items.”
Continuing their relentless pursuit of counterfeiters, on Wednesday, 13 March 2024, the National Counterfeit unit led another integrated takedown operation that struck a severe blow to the counterfeit market in Bellville, Western Cape. This operation resulted in the confiscation of counterfeit goods worth over R80 million and the arrest of two Somalian suspects.
The efforts were not the work of the SAPS alone; the collaborative operation involved members from various specialised units including officials from the South African Revenue Services (SARS), the Border Management Authority (BMA), and Brand Protectors. The Bellville bust realized the seizure of close to 100,000 counterfeit items that encompassed clothing, sports apparel, shoes, bags, caps, and perfumes, showcasing the diverse range of items that counterfeiters attempt to replicate and distribute illegally.
The bust in Bellville follows closely on the heels of another successful takedown operation in the Johannesburg CBD the previous week, where the team confiscated counterfeit goods worth over R9 million.
