Gauteng police have successfully apprehended 22-year-old Tebogo “Lepai” Maboa, a wanted suspect in connection with the murder of a 59-year-old man in Sebayeng, Limpopo. Maboa was captured on Tuesday, 21 January 2025, at his hideout in Olievenhoutbosch, Gauteng. Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Stephen Thakeng confirmed the arrest, attributing the breakthrough to critical information provided by community members.
The murder case, which has drawn national attention, stems from the brutal killing of the victim in July 2024. The man was attacked and strangled to death at his Sebayeng residence by five suspects—two males and three females—after refusing to hand over a lump sum payment he had recently received following a motor vehicle accident. The suspects fled the scene on foot, leaving behind a devastated family and community.
Swift Police Action and Community Support
The arrest of Tebogo Maboa comes after police sought assistance from the public to locate the suspect, whose photograph was widely circulated on media platforms. Community members played a pivotal role by reporting sightings of the wanted individual to authorities. The Pretoria K9 Unit acted promptly on these leads, apprehending Maboa at his Gauteng hideout.
Lieutenant Colonel Thakeng expressed gratitude to the community for their cooperation, stating, “This arrest would not have been possible without the valuable information provided by law-abiding citizens. Their vigilance and commitment to justice have made a significant difference.”
Following his arrest, Maboa was transported to Limpopo Province, where he is set to join his co-accused in court proceedings.
Details of the Murder Case
The murder occurred in July 2024 when the victim, who had recently received compensation from a motor vehicle accident, was attacked in his Sebayeng home. The suspects reportedly demanded a cash payout, which the victim refused. This refusal led to a fatal altercation in which the man was strangled.
The suspects fled the scene, but police investigations quickly gained momentum. By December 2024, four of the five suspects had been arrested. They include Wilson Mashao Malatji (24), Tebatso Mahakwana (23), Flora Mabitsela (39), and Kate Maboa (41), the mother of Tebogo “Lepai” Maboa.
The four suspects appeared before the Mankweng Magistrate’s Court on Friday, 17 January 2025, facing charges of murder. Their case was postponed to 28 January 2025 for a formal bail application and further investigations.
Maboa’s Court Appearance
Following his arrest, Tebogo “Lepai” Maboa appeared before the Mankweng Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, 23 January 2025. He faces a murder charge and has been remanded in custody. His case has also been postponed to 28 January 2025 to align with the court proceedings of his co-accused.
Provincial Commissioner Praises Community Efforts
Limpopo Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, commended the public for their role in apprehending Maboa. “We applaud the community members who came forward with information that led to this successful arrest. It demonstrates the power of partnership between the police and the public in combating crime,” she said.
Lieutenant General Hadebe also highlighted the importance of maintaining community trust in law enforcement to ensure continued cooperation in solving cases.
The Legal Process and Investigations
The suspects, including Maboa, now face a rigorous legal process. The murder charge against them is being closely monitored, given the brutal nature of the crime and its impact on the Sebayeng community.
Police investigations are ongoing, with authorities determined to ensure that justice is served. Further evidence is being gathered to strengthen the case against the accused, and additional details may emerge as the investigation progresses.
