Allegation Emerges in Missing Couple Case
By Neo Mofokeng
In a significant development in the case of the missing journalist Sibusiso Aserie Ndlovu and his partner, Zodwa Precious Mdhluli, five individuals appeared before the KwaMhlanga Magistrate’s Court on Friday. The proceedings were marked by serious allegations, including a claim of police assault by one of the accused, and the presentation of compelling cell phone evidence linking the suspects to the couple’s disappearance.

Cell Phone Data Places Accused Near Victims
The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) in Mpumalanga presented evidence indicating that cell phone data positioned the first and second accused near Ndlovu and Mdhluli around the time they vanished. Provincial NPA spokesperson Monica Nyuswa stated, “Cell phone evidence reveals that the cell phones of accused numbers one and two are linking them with the cell phones of the victims.” She further explained that the data suggests the accused were in proximity to the victims and that one of them was present at the couple’s residence prior to their disappearance.
⸻
Accusation of Police Assault
During the court proceedings, the first accused alleged that he had been assaulted by police officers. In response to this claim, the magistrate ordered his immediate transfer to a hospital for medical care to address any injuries sustained. This development has raised concerns about the treatment of suspects in custody and the adherence to legal protocols during investigations.
⸻
Application for Media Coverage
Given the national significance of the case, the court considered an application to allow the proceedings to be broadcast. The request underscores the public interest in the case and the demand for transparency in the judicial process. A decision on this application is pending, with considerations being made regarding the potential impact on the trial and the rights of the accused.
⸻
Discovery of Skeletal Remains
In a related development, two sets of skeletal remains were recently discovered in a bush in Limpopo. These remains are believed to be connected to the missing couple. DNA tests are currently underway to confirm their identities. The outcome of these tests is crucial in determining the next steps in the investigation and potential charges against the accused.
⸻
Potential for Additional Charges
The NPA has indicated that further charges could be laid depending on the outcome of the ongoing investigation. Nyuswa noted, “There is a possibility of adding more charges depending on the outcome of the investigations.” This statement suggests that the case is still developing, and additional evidence may lead to more serious charges against the suspects.
⸻
Government Response and Condolences
Deputy Minister in the Presidency, Kenny Morolong, has expressed heartfelt condolences to the families, friends, and colleagues of the late journalist Aserie Ndlovu and his partner Zodwa Mdhluli. Speaking on behalf of The Presidency and the Government Communication and Information System (GCIS), Morolong shared his sorrow following the tragic discovery of their bodies by the South African Police Service (SAPS). The couple had been missing since 18 February 2025, and their deaths have sparked outrage and sadness across the nation. Four suspects linked to the incident are now in police custody, thanks to a determined effort by law enforcement.
Aserie Ndlovu was a well-known journalist and the founder of Capital Live FM, a community radio station in Mamelodi. He dedicated his career to amplifying the voices of ordinary people and tackling issues that mattered to his community. Zodwa Mdhluli, his partner, was equally cherished for her warm spirit and commitment to social causes, making their loss deeply felt by those who knew them.
⸻
Discovery of Bodies and Arrests
The breakthrough in this case came after a lengthy and thorough investigation by a multi-disciplinary team of law enforcement agencies. Their hard work led to the discovery of two lifeless bodies, believed to be Ndlovu and Mdhluli, and the swift arrest of four suspects. Morolong praised the SAPS and all involved agencies for their tireless efforts, saying their dedication has brought some measure of justice to this heartbreaking situation.
⸻
Morolong’s Condemnation and Government Response
In a strongly worded statement, Morolong condemned the killings as a “senseless, barbaric, and brute act of violence.” He paid tribute to Ndlovu’s legacy, noting, “Mr Ndlovu served the public through his work in the media sector, contributing meaningfully to our democracy by informing and educating citizens.” The Deputy Minister stressed that the loss of both Ndlovu and Mdhluli is a stark reminder of the urgent need to tackle violent crime in South Africa.
The news has hit hard in Mamelodi and beyond. Colleagues at Capital Live FM and listeners alike have voiced their grief and anger, with many demanding justice and better protection for journalists and everyday citizens. Their deaths have reignited conversations about safety and the risks faced by those who work to keep the public informed.
Morolong underscored the government’s resolve, stating, “As The Presidency and communications community, we extend our deepest condolences to the families, friends, and colleagues of the victims.” He also reaffirmed the government’s commitment to ensuring the safety of all South Africans, particularly media practitioners who uphold transparency, accountability, and the values of democracy.
