Suspect Arrested in Connection with Deputy Director Sello Machitje’s Tragic Death
By Thabo Mosia
Johannesburg – Police have arrested a suspect believed to be connected to the tragic murder of Sello Machitje, the deputy director of the Department of Water and Sanitation. Machitje, a dedicated public servant, was hijacked and kidnapped last Thursday around the Vaal area, leaving his family and colleagues in shock and grief.
The Discovery
Machitje’s body was discovered in an open field in Bekkersdal, Westonaria, more than a week after he was reported missing. His death has sent ripples of sorrow through his family, friends, and colleagues at the Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS).
The Arrest
The breakthrough in the investigation came when police found Machitje’s car in the possession of a 53-year-old suspect in Alexandra, north of Johannesburg. Police spokesperson Colonel Noxolo Kweza confirmed the arrest but noted that the suspect has not yet been directly linked to Machitje’s murder.
“The family verified the identity of the individual as being Mr. Sello Machitje. Investigations are still being conducted to determine if there is a connection between the suspect and the murder,” said Colonel Kweza.
Timeline of Events
Machitje was last seen leaving his Johannesburg home on July 8, heading towards the Eastern Cape for a work assignment. His family grew concerned when they could not reach him later that evening, prompting them to report him missing. The car tracking company, using the OB number provided by the police, traced his vehicle to Alexandra, where the suspect was apprehended.
Family’s Agony
Family spokesperson Kgosi Makgorogo detailed the family’s anguish, explaining that Machitje’s sudden disappearance was out of character. “His wife and sister were worried since he usually called to confirm his whereabouts. However, on that particular day, he didn’t,” Makgorogo said.
Department’s Condolences
The Department of Water and Sanitation expressed deep sorrow over Machitje’s untimely death. In a statement, the department described him as a dedicated and hardworking individual responsible for management accounting in the Water Trading Entity. “DWS conveys its condolences to his family and loved ones, as well as the colleagues in the department, and further urges law enforcement agencies to leave no stone unturned in finding those responsible for this heinous deed,” the statement read.
Ongoing Investigation
Police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding Machitje’s death. While the suspect remains in custody for possessing the stolen vehicle, efforts are being made to determine if he played a role in the murder. Social media posts have suggested that Machitje was hijacked in the Vaal area, and police are exploring all leads to ensure justice is served.
