By Thys Khiba – Twenty-one-year old Lebohang Pali is expected to appear in the Free State court on Wednesday after his pit bulls mauled a three-year-old on Sunday.
Pali appeared in court on Monday and was granted bail of R300.
He was arrested for allegedly violating the law relating to the keeping of vicious dogs.
In a video seen by Free State Central News, on Sunday two pit bulls mauled Keketso Saule to death in a neighbour’s yard in Phomolong, Hennenman.
On the day of the incident, Police confirmed the situation was tense as angry residents of Sekoti-mpate, Hennenman threatenedviolent action against Pali.
Public Order Policing (POP) unit officials were deployed to the area as the situation was tense.
Pitbull owner was whisked away by police officials for safety reasons.
“On Sunday, 20 November 2022 at about 9:30, Hennenmanpolice were called to Sekoti-mpate with reports that a child had been mauled by a dog.
On arrival at the scene, members found a large group of community members already outside the yard. The 3-year-old toddler was certified dead at the scene with severe injuries to the head. The dog was removed by its owner and is locked away at a place known to the police,” said police spokesperson Sgt Mahlomola Kareli.
The two dogs that were involved in the incident were attacked by angry residents after the incident. One of the dogs was approached with stones and burnt to death.
The other pit-bull survived after being taken to the SPCA centre for safekeeping.
Addressing the media, the executive mayor of the Matjhabeng Municipality, Thanduxolo Khalipa indicated that they are planning to impose stricter by-laws for the removal of aggressive animals from the community.
At least 49 pit bulls have been surrendered to various SPCA centres in the Free State following Olebogeng Mosime’s attack.
