The Polokwane Municipality has confirmed that the Peter Mokaba Stadium’s pitch sustained significant damage during the “One Woman Show” hosted by Limpopo musician Makhadzi on 21 December 2024. As a result, the stadium will be unable to host the upcoming Betway Premiership fixtures scheduled for late December and possibly into January 2025.

Sekhukhune United was set to host Marumo Gallants on Saturday, 28 December, followed by Magesi FC’s match against Orlando Pirates on 29 December at the same venue. Both matches have now been relocated to the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium to ensure the continuity of the league schedule.

In an official statement, the Polokwane Municipality acknowledged the extent of the damage: “We acknowledge that the New Peter Mokaba Stadium pitch sustained significant damage during the recent festival.” After a thorough assessment, it was determined that the pitch requires extensive intervention and will not be able to host the scheduled Betway Premiership matches this weekend and possibly in January 2025.

The Municipality further stated: “To ensure the continuity of these fixtures, we have initiated discussions with all relevant stakeholders to relocate the matches to the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium. Simultaneously, plans are underway to refurbish the damaged pitch and restore it to the required standard in preparation for upcoming Betway PSL Premiership fixtures.”

The next scheduled match at the New Peter Mokaba Stadium is between Sekhukhune United and SuperSport United on 12 January 2025. The Municipality has committed to providing updates as the refurbishment progresses to ensure minimal disruption to scheduled events.
