‘People Have Lost Their Sense of Humanity’:
Delmas, Mpumalanga – Police in Delmas have launched a manhunt after seven-year-old Thandolwethu Mahlangu was found murdered under rubble in Delpark Extension 2 on Wednesday morning, 12 November 2025.
The young girl’s disappearance on Monday evening sparked a desperate community search, only for her mother to receive a chilling ransom demand of R30,000 the next day. This heartbreaking case has left the community in shock and prompted strong words from authorities, who have activated a 72-hour plan to catch the killers. Acting provincial commissioner Major General Zeph Mkhwanazi condemned the act, saying, “People have lost their sense of humanity. How can anyone kill an innocent young girl who had her whole future ahead of her? We will not rest until the suspect or suspects are behind bars.”
The tragedy highlights the growing dangers facing children in South Africa, drawing parallels to recent child murders like that of 14-month-old Lindokuhle Kota in Khayelitsha. As investigations continue, calls are mounting for better community vigilance and faster police action to protect the vulnerable.
The Tragic Disappearance and Ransom Demand
Thandolwethu, also known as Thandolwethu Perseverance Mahlangu, was last seen on Monday, 10 November 2025, when she went to her father’s house in Delpark Extension 2 and never returned home. Her mother, Ayanda Ngwenyama, reported her missing to the police the following day after frantic searches yielded no results.
Community members joined the effort, scouring the area throughout Tuesday night, but the girl remained unfound. On Tuesday morning, Ngwenyama received a text message from an unknown number demanding R30,000 – allegedly a debt owed by the child’s father – in exchange for her safe return. Police opened a missing person inquiry and attempted to trace the cellphone number to the Botleng area.
Loan sharks in the vicinity were brought in for questioning, and several addresses linked to the investigation were visited, but there was no success. The ransom demand added a layer of terror to the family’s ordeal, turning a missing child case into a potential kidnapping for extortion.
Discovery of the Body and Police Response
On Wednesday morning, a neighbour cleaning his yard made the grim discovery: small legs protruding from rubble behind a shack. The child’s body was found buried under the debris, confirming the worst fears. “All relevant authorities were immediately informed and attended the scene,” said provincial police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Jabu Ndubane.
A murder case has been opened, and police are appealing for information. Anyone with details is urged to contact branch commander Lieutenant Colonel Victor Dibakoane at 079 268 0040, Crime Stop at 08600 10111, or use the MySAPS App anonymously.
Mkhwanazi has activated a 72-hour plan to track down the perpetrators, vowing relentless pursuit. This intensive operation involves mobilising resources for rapid leads and arrests, a strategy often used in high-priority cases.
