CAF has officially confirmed that Dr. Patrice Motsepe, the current President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), will stand for re-election in March 2025. Motsepe’s decision follows strong support from several key stakeholders, including CAF Member Association Presidents, Zonal Union Presidents, and other influential figures across African football. The announcement underscores Motsepe’s commitment to African football, as he seeks to continue the progress made since he took office in 2021.

Dr. Motsepe, who assumed the presidency unopposed in 2021, has focused on enhancing financial governance and expanding revenue streams within CAF. His leadership has brought stability, with significant reforms aimed at transparency and accountability in financial management, areas that were under scrutiny prior to his tenure. He introduced stricter financial controls, independent ethics oversight, and executive term limits, which have improved CAF’s governance and reputation across the football community. His leadership style has garnered widespread support from African football zones, including COSAFA, WAFU, and CECAFA, although UNAF (representing North Africa) has opted not to endorse his candidacy.

Motsepe’s re-election campaign is expected to prioritise continued financial transparency, governance reforms, and further integration of African football into the global sphere. He has also aimed to empower local football structures and bolster grassroots development, positioning African football for long-term success. His tenure has been marked by positive changes that have restored confidence in CAF’s management and aligned with FIFA’s strategic vision for African football.

The upcoming election, scheduled for March 12, 2025, in Cairo, Egypt, will shape the future of African football governance. Dr. Motsepe’s candidacy highlights his dedication to uplifting African football and his readiness to address the challenges that CAF and its member associations face. If re-elected, Motsepe’s continued focus on transparency and development initiatives is anticipated to strengthen CAF’s standing both on the continent and globally.
