Passenger Plane
By Chris Williams
A passenger plane operated by Azerbaijan Airlines crashed near Aktau Airport in Kazakhstan on Wednesday, 25 December 2024. The Embraer 190 aircraft was en route from Baku, Azerbaijan, to Grozny, Russia, but was diverted to Aktau due to dense fog in Grozny. Tragically, 66 of the 72 individuals on board have been confirmed dead, with six survivors receiving medical attention.
Flight Details and Diversion
The flight departed from Heydar Aliyev International Airport in Baku at approximately 06:00 local time, carrying 67 passengers and five crew members. Due to adverse weather conditions in Grozny, the flight crew requested an emergency landing at Aktau Airport in western Kazakhstan. During the approach, the aircraft crashed approximately 5 kilometers from the runway.
Emergency Response
Kazakhstan’s Ministry of Emergency Situations reported that emergency services promptly arrived at the crash site, extinguishing a fire that had erupted upon impact. Rescue teams recovered 66 bodies and located six survivors, who were transported to a nearby hospital. The survivors are reported to be in critical condition.
Investigation Underway
Authorities have initiated a comprehensive investigation to determine the cause of the crash. Preliminary reports suggest that poor visibility due to fog may have been a contributing factor. Flight data recorders, commonly known as black boxes, have been recovered and will be analyzed to provide further insights into the incident.
Airline Statement
Azerbaijan Airlines has expressed profound sorrow over the tragedy and extended condolences to the families of the victims. The airline has pledged full cooperation with investigative authorities and has dispatched a team to the crash site to assist with the investigation and support efforts.
Historical Context
This incident marks a tragic recurrence for Azerbaijan Airlines. In December 2005, Azerbaijan Airlines Flight 217, an Antonov An-140, crashed into the Caspian Sea shortly after departing Baku for Aktau, resulting in the loss of all 23 people on board.
International Aviation Community Reacts
The global aviation community has expressed condolences and emphasized the importance of thorough investigations to enhance flight safety. The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) has offered technical assistance to Kazakhstani authorities to aid in the investigation.
Support for Affected Families
Both Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan have established emergency hotlines and support centers for the families of passengers. Counseling services and logistical assistance are being provided to help them during this difficult time.
Ongoing Developments
As the investigation progresses, further details will be released by the authorities. Azerbaijan Airlines has temporarily suspended flights on the Baku-Grozny route pending the outcome of the investigation.
