Parole for Alison Botha’s Attackers Revoked, Convicted Rapists Back in Prison

Alison Botha

The Department of Correctional Services has officially revoked the parole of Frans du Toit and Theuns Kruger, the two men convicted for the brutal 1994 attack on Alison Botha. The decision, announced by Correctional Services Minister Pieter Groenewald on Tuesday, 4 February 2025, comes after public outcry and legal evaluations surrounding their initial release.

The 1994 Attack That Shocked South Africa

✔ On December 18, 1994, Alison Botha was abducted at knifepoint outside her home in Gqeberha.
✔ She was driven to a remote nature reserve by Frans du Toit and Theuns Kruger, where she was repeatedly raped, stabbed over 30 times, and left for dead.
✔ Against all odds, Botha survived the attack, crawled to safety, and provided critical testimony that led to the conviction of her attackers.
✔ In 1995, both men were sentenced to life imprisonment for rape, attempted murder, and kidnapping.

Botha’s story became one of the most harrowing tales of survival, and she has since dedicated her life to advocating for victims of gender-based violence.

Secret Parole Release in 2023 Sparks Outrage

✔ In 2023, Frans du Toit and Theuns Kruger were granted parole after serving 28 years in prison.
✔ Shockingly, Botha was not notified about their release—a violation of victim rights laws.
✔ The public and advocacy groups were outraged, questioning how convicted rapists and attempted murderers could be freed without informing the victim.

The Correctional Services Act requires victims to be notified before parole decisions, but in this case, Botha was kept in the dark.

Minister of Correctional Services Cancels Parole

Following legal reviews and public pressure, Minister Pieter Groenewald announced that the parole of Du Toit and Kruger had been revoked.

✔ “Following a thorough evaluation and consultation of legal opinions, the decision was made in accordance with the Correctional Services Act, which empowers me as Minister to cancel parole for individuals sentenced to life imprisonment.”
✔ He confirmed that both men are now back in custody.
