Public Protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane

The South African Parliament has decisively resolved to remove Public Protector Advocate Busisiwe Mkhwebane from office. An overwhelming majority of 318 MPs, accounting for 79.5% of the total, voted in favor of her removal, while only 43 MPs opposed the impeachment. Notably, a single MP abstained from the vote.

The political parties supporting the removal of Advocate Busisiwe Mkhwebane include the ANC, DA, FF+, ACDP, IFP, Good Party, and NFP. On the opposing side, parties such as EFF, UDM, ATM, PAC, AIC, COPE, and Al Jama’ah stood against her removal.

In a physical sitting, the vote was conducted through an open call voting procedure. This decision was prompted by the submission of a report from Parliament’s Section 194 Committee to the National Assembly. The committee cited incompetence, incapacity, and misconduct as grounds for Mkhwebane’s removal.

Though the ATM and UDM parties requested a secret ballot vote, their plea was denied by Speaker Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula. As per Section 194 of the Constitution, the removal of a Public Protector from office necessitates a two-thirds majority vote, which was evidently met in this case.
