Kaizer Chiefs climbed up to fifth spot on the 2021/22 DStv Premiership standings following a 2-1 win over SuperSport United at Lucas Moripe Stadium on Sunday.
Bernard Parker ended his goal drought in the league with a brace to move past Siphiwe Tshabalala as the Amakhosi’s all-time top scorer in the Premier Soccer League era. Parker netted either side of a Njabulo Ngcobo own goal.
Victory moved Chiefs within three points of SuperSport who remained in second place after succumbing to their first defeat of the league season.
Chiefs hit the front on the cusp of half-time. Keagan Dolly slipped Parker through on goal and he made no mistake with a precise finish past Ronwen Williams at the Bafana Bafana captain’s near post.
Their lead, though, would last just two minutes as Matsatsanta pulled level with the final move of the first half. In an attempt to clear Sipho Mbule’s free-kick Ngcobo could only succeed in guiding the ball past his own goalkeeper. Thamsanqa Gabuza claimed the goal, but replays revealed that the ball came off the Chiefs defender’s head.
Parker restored Chiefs’ lead four minutes after the break. Once more it was Dolly who teed up the Chiefs skipper who completed his double with a neat finish across Williams and into the corner of the net.
Matsatsantsa pushed forward in search of the equaliser, but failed to test Daniel Akpeyi as Stuart Baxter claimed a morale-boosting win against his former employers.
