Pakistan claimed a historic victory on Sunday, securing their first One Day International (ODI) series win in Australia in 22 years with a commanding eight-wicket triumph. Led by Mohammad Rizwan, Pakistan’s team displayed exceptional bowling and aggressive batting, successfully chasing down Australia’s modest total of 140 runs in just 27 overs at Perth Stadium.
This victory was a significant milestone for Pakistan, marking their first ODI series win on Australian soil since 2002. Opening batsmen Saim Ayub and Abdullah Shafique laid a solid foundation with scores of 42 and 37, respectively, propelling Pakistan to a memorable win. The impressive bowling unit, including Naseem Shah, Shaheen Shah Afridi, and Haris Rauf, dismantled Australia’s batting lineup, leaving the hosts struggling to post a competitive score.
A Dominant Performance with the Ball
Pakistan’s success in this series was largely driven by their high-quality bowling attack. Naseem Shah, Shaheen Shah Afridi, and Haris Rauf combined forces to apply relentless pressure on the Australian batters, quickly reducing them to a paltry 140. Their disciplined bowling and tactical field placements led to early breakthroughs, setting Pakistan on the path to victory.
The Australian team, without key players Steve Smith, Marnus Labuschagne, Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood, and Mitchell Starc, struggled to find momentum. The absence of these regulars, who were rested ahead of the upcoming Test series against India, was felt as the Australian batting lineup faltered under Pakistan’s bowling attack. The Pakistani bowlers took full advantage of this, delivering a clinical performance that kept Australia on the back foot throughout the innings.
Pakistan’s Chase: Saim Ayub and Abdullah Shafique Shine
In response to Australia’s low score, Pakistan’s openers Saim Ayub and Abdullah Shafique stepped onto the pitch with confidence and aggression. The duo attacked from the outset, capitalising on Australia’s lacklustre bowling and riding their luck to build a solid partnership. Ayub, who had previously smashed 82 in the second ODI in Adelaide, continued his fine form, scoring 42 runs, while Shafique added 37.
The openers managed to reach the halfway point in the chase without losing a wicket, reaching 70/0 by the 14th over. Ayub and Shafique’s aggressive approach set the tone for Pakistan, with Ayub surviving two dropped catches by Lance Morris and Spencer Johnson. Shafique was also given a reprieve on 28, as Adam Zampa put down a catch, allowing the Pakistani openers to push forward with ease.
Australia managed to break the partnership when Lance Morris struck, catching and bowling Shafique, and then taking Ayub’s wicket five balls later. Despite the two quick wickets, Pakistan remained in control, needing only 50 more runs for victory.
Rizwan and Babar Azam Steer Pakistan Home
With two wickets down, captain Mohammad Rizwan and star batsman Babar Azam took charge of the chase, providing the stability and experience needed to complete the win. Rizwan scored an unbeaten 30, while Babar contributed 28, as they calmly guided Pakistan to the target. Their partnership reflected Pakistan’s confidence and control over the game, as they comfortably sealed the eight-wicket victory in the 27th over.
Speaking after the match, Rizwan praised his team’s performance, attributing the win to their disciplined bowling and solid starts from the openers. “It’s a special moment for me and the fans,” he said. “I’ll give all the credit to the bowlers. Australia in Australia is not easy. But Saim and Abdullah have given us a couple of great starts, too. The fans love us regardless of whether we win or lose, and I really appreciate that.”
Australia’s Struggles Without Key Players
Australia’s decision to rest several key players ahead of their Test series against India proved costly, as the team struggled to mount a competitive performance without its core members. The absence of seasoned players like Steve Smith, Marnus Labuschagne, Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood, and Mitchell Starc left Australia vulnerable, with younger and less experienced players failing to fill the gap.
The series loss raises questions about Australia’s depth and their strategy of rotating players before major Test matches. While the upcoming series against India is a priority, the lack of experienced players in the ODI squad exposed weaknesses that Pakistan exploited with precision.
The Australian bowling attack lacked the intensity and accuracy needed to contain Pakistan’s aggressive start. Despite a few opportunities to dismiss Pakistan’s openers, Australia’s fielding errors, including dropped catches, allowed Pakistan to dominate. Without the leadership of their regulars, Australia’s younger players struggled to handle the pressure, resulting in a comprehensive loss.
A Historic Achievement for Pakistan
This ODI series win is a monumental achievement for Pakistan, marking their first series triumph in Australia since 2002. The victory reflects Pakistan’s growth as a team and their ability to perform under challenging conditions. The series began with a narrow two-wicket loss for Pakistan in Melbourne, but the team quickly rebounded with a nine-wicket victory in Adelaide, setting up a decisive third match in Perth.
The series win has boosted Pakistan’s confidence, with fans celebrating the team’s achievement in Australia. Pakistan’s consistent performances, driven by a balanced mix of young talent and experienced players, signal a promising future for the team. The series showcased Pakistan’s depth in both batting and bowling, with emerging stars like Saim Ayub and Abdullah Shafique contributing alongside established players.
